CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 3 University of North Carolina used a 5-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Towson University women's lacrosse team and claim a 17-8 win on Saturday afternoon in Kenan Stadium. Attackers Andi Raymond and Ashleigh Rohrback led the Tigers with three goals each in the regular season finale.
The first half proved to be a game of runs as the two squads went back and forth throughout. The Tigers (9-7) grabbed an early lead as freshman attacker Gabby Cha scored an unassisted goal at 28:56. The Tar Heels (13-3) then scored three straight goals and took a 3-1 advantage with 16:30 to go in the half.
Rohrback broke up the Tar Heel run with a goal at 15:02 as she came from the behind net and beat her defender and the UNC goalkeeper. North Carolina went back on top by two, 4-2 with a goal at 14:33. Rohrback's second of the game at 8:12 made it a 4-3 game. Rohrback's second goal was assisted by junior attacker Taylor Moore.
Again the two teams traded goals as a UNC goal was followed by a Tiger score from Raymond at 5:54. Raymond's was her 40th of the year and made it a 5-4 game.
The Tar Heels scored the final two goals of the half and took a 7-4 lead at intermission.
Towson outshot North Carolina 11-10 in the first 30 minutes of action and won eight of the 12 draw controls in the first half.
UNC extended its lead to four on Maggie Bill's second goal of the game at 29:26.
Towson cut its deficit back to three, 8-5 on a free position goal from redshirt freshman defender Michelle Gildea at 25:20.
The Tar Heels then reeled off five straight goals and took a 13-5 lead with 17:08 to play in the game. Carly Davis and Sydney Holman each scored their third goal of the game during that run.
Rohrback and Raymond scored back-to-back goals which made it a 13-7 game with 13:23 remaining in the game. North Carolina closed the game on a 3-1 run which made it a 17-8 final. Abbey Friend scored a pair of goals during that run for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels outshot the Tigers 20-10 in the second half and finished the game with a 30-21 edge. North Carolina won 10 of 15 draw controls in the second half and held a 14-13 advantage for the game.
Caylee Waters started the game and made four first half saves to earn the win in goal. Megan Ward made three saves in the second half. Junior Kelsea Donnelly made eight saves in the loss for the Tigers.
Raymond led the Tigers with four points on three goals and an assist. Rohrback added three goals while Cha had a goal and an assist.
Holman led North Carolina with five points on three goals and two assists. Davis and Friend had three goals each.
Towson will be back in action on Friday, May 2 when the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament begins in Williamsburg, Va. The Tigers' oppponent and game time is still to be determined so please check back with TowsonTigers.com for more details.
