Tigers Conclude Home Season With 9-2 Win Over UNCW

TOWSON, Md. -Missy McCormick and Maureen Hepner both hit homeruns, leading the Towson University softball team to a 9-2 victory over UNCW on Sunday in the team's final home game of the regular season.

Prior to the start of the game, Towson recognized seniors Hepner, Delanie Dunham, Mickelle Oslin and Victoria Sindone for their contributions to the program.

It was an important victory for the Tigers, who improved to 27-20 overall and 6-6 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. With one weekend remaining in the regular season, the Tigers are in fourth-place in the CAA. The top four teams in the league qualify for the CAA Tournament at the site of the highest seed on May 7-9.

With its nine runs on Sunday, Towson has 253 for the season. That mark is a school record, eclipsing the 2008 team which scored 250.

The Seahawks (18-31, 4-10 CAA) took an early 2-0 lead on solo homeruns by Lauren Moore and Casey Shue in the top of the third inning.

But the Tiger offense responded in the bottom of the inning when Hepner hit an RBI double and McCormick hit a three-run homer to give Towson a 4-2 lead after three innings.

McCormick added another RBI with a single in the fifth inning, as the Tigers added four more runs in the frame. Holiday Cahill hit a two-run single and Nicole Delgado had an RBI groundout as part of the inning.

Hepner slugged her 12th homer of the season in the sixth inning to give the Tigers the final 9-2 margin.

Hepner and McCormick became the only teammates in school history with more than 10 homeruns and 40 RBIs in the same season. Prior to this season, Towson had never had two players with 40 or more RBIs in the same season or 10 or more homeruns in the same season. Sunday, the duo became the first pair to accomplish both feats. Hepner has 12 homers and 49 RBIs while McCormick adds 10 homers and 47 RBIs.

It was a stellar day in the circle for McCormick, as well. She pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out five and not issuing a walk. It was her 15th win of the season.

Towson travels to the College of Charleston for its final series of the regular season beginning on Friday with a doubleheader at 5 p.m.
