Late Goal Lifts Drexel over Tigers, 9-8

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.Kelly Palace scored with 27 seconds to play to lift Drexel University to a 9-8 victory over the Towson University women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Redshirt junior attacker Andi Raymond led the Tigers with four points as the Tigers had a two-game win streak snapped.

The two teams traded goals early as Raymond's goal at 24:27 tied the game at 1-1.

Drexel (5-7, 1-1 CAA) then used a 4-0 run to take a 5-1 lead with 16:17 to play in the first half. Palace had a goal and an assist for the Dragons during that stretch.

Raymond briefly halted the Dragon run with a free position goal at 15:43. Alissa Watts' second goal of the half at 12:43 pushed the Drexel lead to 6-2. Freshman attacker Gabby Cha scored a free position goal for the Tigers (7-6, 2-1 CAA) at 1:24. Cha's goal made it a 6-3 game in favor of the home team at the half.

Drexel outshot the Tigers 10-6 in the first half while each team won five draw controls.

The Tigers needed just 31 seconds into the second half to cut their deficit to two, 6-4. Junior attacker Taylor Moore scored an unassisted goal at 29:29.

Back-to-back goals from freshman midfielder Colby Unkle allowed the Tigers to tie the game at 6-6 with 21:13 to play. Unkle's first goal was assisted by Cha and the second by Raymond.

Drexel went back on top, 7-6 as Watts scored her third of the game at 18:46.

Cha's second goal of the game tied the contest at 7-7 with 11:12 to play in the game. Sophomore midfielder Breanna Hamm gave Towson its first lead of the game 8-7 with 8:24 remaining in the contest. Hamm's goal came on a free position shot.

Palace took a pass from Amanda Norcini at 6:02 and fired it home to tie the game at 8-8. Both teams had their chance in the final six minutes of play but it wasn't till 27 seconds that someone was able to dent the scoreboard. Again it was Palace scoring off a pass from Norcini which gave Drexel the win.

Both teams took eight shots in the second half as Drexel finished the game with an 18-14 edge in that category. Towson won five of the eight draw controls in the second half and held a 10-8 edge for the game.

Teresha Bradley made five saves to earn the win in goal for Drexel. Junior Kelsea Donnelly made four saves in the loss for the Tigers.

Raymond finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Tigers on the afternoon. Cha had two goals and an assist while Unkle added two goals.

Palace led Drexel with three goals and an assist while Watts contributed three goals.

The Tigers return home to host William & Mary on Friday, Apr. 11 at 7 p.m. in Unitas Stadium.
