BOX SCORE COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team (1-3) picked up its first win of the season as they defeated No. 18 American (3-2) by a final score of 4-3 at the Maryland Field Hockey Complex in a neutral site game. Towson scored four goals in the final seven minutes to earn the victory.
American took an early lead in the contest as
Grace Wilson scored on a penalty stroke in the eight minute mark. The Eagles would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 30
th minute as
Sophie Crawshay recorded an unassisted goal.
The Eagles outshot the Tigers 14-3 in the first half as sophomore
Megan Boyle made five first-half saves.
American's
Rebecca Treharne scored with the help of Wilson and
Natalie Marsh to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead over the Tigers in the 61
st minute.
A minute later, Towson senior
Courtney Branco would pick up her first goal of the season unassisted to cut the Eagles' lead back to two.
The Tiger scoring continued as senior
Kelly Mattingly scored her first goal of the season off a pass from junior
Stacey Mackintosh in the 64
th minute. Two minutes later, Mackintosh would tie the game as she scored her first career goal with help from junior
Kelsey Jenkens.
Towson's Branco scored her second goal of the game unassisted off of a penalty corner in the 69
th minute to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
American would call a timeout with less than a minute remaining but it was not enough as Towson picked up its first win of the season.
Boyle made two second-half saves for a game total of seven to earn the win for the Tigers.
Towson returns to action tomorrow, Sept. 14 as the Tigers travel to Lehigh for a noon game.
