OPENING TIP: After playing three straight home games, the Tiger women's basketball team hits the road this weekend for a pair of contests. The action starts Friday, Jan. 16 when the Tigers head to College of Charleston for a 7 p.m. tip.
SERIES HISTORY: The Tigers renew a fairly new match-up as they travel to College of Charleston today. The Tigers and Cougars met for the first time last season and Towson took two of the three contests. Towson swept the regular season meetings, including a 64-60 win in Charleston and a 75-63 win in Towson. The Cougars ended the Tiger season with a 70-64 victory in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) quarterfinals.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: Redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen has tallied a double-double performance in three of the first four CAA games this year. Overall, Hines-Allen has eight double-doubles this year. She leads the team and the CAA in that category. As of Monday morning, the Tigers had the CAA leader in double-doubles on both the women's and the men's side of the ball (Hines-Allen - eight and
John Davis - six). Hines-Allen ranks 18th in the nation for double-doubles this season.
GOING DEEP: Towson continues to show the ability to count on a three-pointer when it needs it of late. The Tigers hit five three-pointers against Hofstra and now have 22 three-pointers in four CAA games. That's 29% of the Tigers' three-pointers for the entire season. One of the keys to Towson's success from behind the arc has been senior guard
Ciara Webb. Webb has started each of the last six games for the Tigers. During the six-game stretch with Webb in the starting line-up the Tigers have connected on 33 three-pointers or 43% (77 total) of its season total. Webb leads the team with 12 three-pointers in the last six games.
FIFTY BELOW: The Tigers held Delaware to just 49 points last Friday night in the 56-49 win. It was a season-low points allowed by the Tigers and the second time this season they have held an opponent to 50 points or less (50-at Loyola). The 49 points allowed by the Tigers is the lowest point total the Tigers have surrendered since they gave up 46 to Loyola during the 2013-14 season. Towson is 4-0 under Head Coach
Niki Reid Geckeler when it holds an opponent to 50 points or less and 11-1 since the start of the 2010-11 season when it hits that mark.
BLOCK PARTY: The Tigers have been hugely successful blocking shots in the first four CAA games of the year. In those four games, the Tigers have outblocked their opponents 21-3. In CAA-only games, the Tigers lead the league while averaging 5.3 blocks per game. Seven Tigers have blocked at least one shot in CAA-only games. That group is led by redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen who has 10 blocks in four CAA games. Overall this season, the Tigers rank tied for second in the CAA while averaging 4.3 blocks per game. Ten Tigers have blocked at least one shot on the season.
REACHING THE 1,000 POINT CLUB: Redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen had 11 points against Hofstra which gave her 306 for the season. Hines-Allen now has 728 points in 46 games as Tiger. Combined with the 239 points she scored at Virginia Tech, Hines-Allen has 967 career points. She needs 33 more points to reach 1,000 for her career.
TAKING THE CHARITY: Junior guard
Dominique Johnson went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe against Hofstra. She has now made at least two free throws in a game nine times this season. Johnson is now 34-for-44 (77.3%) from the foul line this season. She ranks fourth in the CAA for free throw percentage this season.
