Opening Draw: The Towson women's lacrosse team finally opens the 39th season in program history and its 33rd as a Division I program when the Tigers make the trip to Monmouth on Saturday. Audio coverage of the game is available on Towson Sports Network with
Kevin Copp providing the call.
Updating the Tigers: After a pair of weather postponments, the Tigers get their 2015 season underway Saturday. The Tigers are coming off their third straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title and seventh straight 10+ win season. Last year, the Tigers again faced an extremely tough schedule as eight of the Tigers' 19 opponents were ranked. Towson went 4-1 in CAA play before defeating Hofstra and James Madison to claim the CAA title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers return 22 letter winners and seven starters from a year ago. That group includes 2014 CAA Co-Player of the Year
Andi Raymond (50g, 26a), 2014 CAA Rookie of the Year
Gabby Cha (22g, 14a) and first team All-CAA goalkeeper
Kelsea Donnelly (9.39 goals against average, .469 save percentage).
Scouting Monmouth: Monmouth is coming off a thrilling 13-12 comeback double overtime win over Rutgers on Wednesday.
Allison Stathius scored the game-winning goal with 16 seconds left in the second overtime. Stathius is tied for the team lead with seven goals this season. She also has a team-high 12 draw controls in three games.
Emily Barbieri has dished out five assists while
Claudia LaMarca has picked up a team-best eight ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
Katie Donohoe leads the way in goal with a 6.00 goals against average and a .500 save percentage.
Towson-Monmouth Series History: Saturday's game will be the third meeting all-time between the two schools. Towson has won each of the first two meetings, including a 13-5 victory last year in Towson. In that game,
Ashleigh Rohrback had a career-high five goals and an assist while
Cassie Campasano and
Stephanie Anderson had two goals each for the Hawks.
Ready to Get Things Started: Towson is 10-2 in its last 12 season openers after an 11-6 win over UMBC last year. The Tigers will be looking to improve their record (2-2) in openers under fifth-year head coach
Sonia LaMonica.
Saving the Best for Last: Thanks to a pair of weather postponments, the Tiger women's lacrosse team is one of the last Division I women's lacrosse programs to take the field. Towson starts Saturday at 12 noon. Thanks to a weather postponment, St. Bonaventure will be the last of 107 Division I women's lacrosse teams to play its first game as they take on Michigan at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Keep Your Eyes on Me: A pair of Tigers have received national attention so far this season. Redshirt senior attacker
Andi Raymond and senior goalkeeper
Kelsea Donnelly were among the 50 players named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List Thursday night. The trophy is given annually to the top men's and women's player in the country. In addition, Raymon and Donnelly were honored as part of Inside Lacrosse's Faceoff Yearbook All-American teams. The pair earned Preseason All-American honorable mention honors.
Getting An Early Start: Saturday's game marks the fourth straight season the Tigers will kick off their schedule in February. Towson is 8-3 in games played in the month of February dating
back to the start of the 1980 season. That number includes wins over UMBC and Georgetown last year. Towson's game against Monmouth will be its only February game this year.
What's Next? Towson is back in action on Saturday, March 7 when the Tigers travel to Georgetown for a 3 p.m. game.
