TOWSON, Md. - Over the course of the summer, TowsonTigers.com will be checking in with alums of the athletic department to see what they remember from their Towson days, what they are doing now and what kind of advice they would offer the current members of their former teams.
First up is
Evan Schulz, an alum of the Tiger volleyball program. Schulz played for the Tigers between 2009 and 2012 and helped the Tigers capture the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Regular Season Championship. She compiled 1,465 assists, 549 digs, 36 service aces, 60 kills and 54 blocks during her career.
Name (please include name when you played at Towson if you are married now) - Evan Alyse Schulz
Years played and position - I played between 2009-13 and was a setter, defensive specialist and utility player
Best Memory from your Towson days - My favorite Towson memory was going to the Loch Raven reservoir with
Andrea Samlin,
Ali Frendak, and some of the Towson men's soccer players where we canoed, swam, and relaxed at the reservoir during finals week.
What are you doing now? I work for Lockheed Martin in the Space and Exploration Systems (SES) area of the Space Systems Company (SSC) sector. I am a System Safety Engineer who develops software tests for InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport). Insight is a Mars lander which will drill about three meters into the Martian crust to read temperatures and obtain seismic readings. This information will be used to study the interior structure of Mars. I also work on OSIRIS-REx, an asteroid sample return mission. Osiris will study the asteroid Bennu and will eventually return samples back to Earth.
What's the most exciting/memorable thing you have done since graduation?I took a slight hiatus after graduation to visit Towson friends like
Ali Frendak in New York City, and spent three weeks in Brazil to visit
Dayane Van Ass and see her hometown. We visited Rio where we saw the Presidents Cup, Christ the Redeemer and sambaed the nights away.
What's one thing you learned at Towson, you can apply to everyday life? Learning how to work with difficult people to get the job/assignment/task done.
If you could offer one piece of advice to today's student-athletes, what would that be? Think outside of your athletic career and seriously consider an academic path. One percent of student-athletes turn professional. This emphasizes the importance of your life outside of athletics.
Have you been back to Towson since graduation and if so what do you think of the changes? Yes, I have been back to Towson on two occasions, 2013 Senior Night and 2014 Tigerfest. The athletic changes in social media and networking are refreshing. Utilizing all of the players to promote the athletic program and university is a great idea and shows a complete picture. It is also good to see the girls happy and involved in other activities besides athletics.
