Tigers Open CAA Play at Northeastern on Sunday

AND SO IT BEGINS: The Towson women's basketball team opens Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with a trip to Northeastern on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. Links to live stats and the video feed can be found on the schedule page of TowsonTigers.com. Fans can also follow the Tigers on Twitter (@Towson_WBB) for updates.

SERIES HISTORY: Towson kicks off Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with a trip to Boston to take on Northeastern. Sunday's game will be the 32nd all-time meeting between the Tigers and Huskies. Towson leads the all-time series 17-14 and has won five straight games against Northeastern. Last year the Tigers claimed a 65-61 win in Towson and a 72-64 win in Boston.

THIS ONE COUNTS: Towson opens its 15th CAA season with Sunday's match-up against Northeastern. The Tigers have split their two CAA openers under Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler. They defeated Hofstra during the 2013-14 season and dropped a heartbreaker to JMU last year. Overall, the Tigers are 7-7 in CAA openers. Towson is 4-6 when opening CAA play on the road after falling in the heartbreaker at JMU last year, 67-66.

BALANCED ATTACK: Towson used a balanced attack to secure the 70-47 win over UMKC on Wednesday afternoon. Nine of the 13 Tigers who appeared in the game scored at least one point. That group was led by senior Dominique Johnson and freshman Sianni Martin. The guards scored 16 points each. Towson also got a balanced attack on the boards as 10 of the 13 Tigers who appeared in the game had a rebound. That group was led by sophomore center Daijha Thomas who had seven rebounds.

THAT WAS A BIG ONE: Wednesday's win over UMKC proved to be a big win for the Tigers in more ways than one. The win snapped a five-game losing streak and gave the Tigers their first win since Nov. 27. In addition, the Tigers' win over UMKC came by 23 points (70-47). It was the largest win for the Tigers under Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler. It was also the biggest win for the program since the 2007-08 team beat George Mason by 27. In addition, the 47 points surrendered by the Tigers were the fewest points given up by the team since they held Loyola to 46 points during the 2013-14 season.

I'LL TAKE THAT: Towson recorded a season-high 13 steals in Wednesday's win over UMKC. Eight Tigers recorded at least one steal in the game and half of those players had two or more swipes. Junior guard Raven Bankston led the way with three steals. It was the most steals by a Tiger team since they had 15 against LIU Brooklyn during the 2013-14 season. Towson is 11-7 under Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler when it records 10 or more steals in a game.

MISS ASSIST: The Tigers have proven to have multiple threats running the offense this season. Five Tigers have recorded 15 or more assists this season and three of those players have 20 or more assists. Senior Dominique Johnson and sophomore Breonn Hughey each have 29 assists this season. Johnson's 29 helpers this season gives her 290 assists for her career. She needs 10 more assists to become the 10th player in program history with 300 career assists. Hughey's 29 assists this year have given her 162 career assists. She needs 31 assists to move into the top 20 for career assists.

UP NEXT: Towson returns home for three straight following Sunday's action. The home stand begins as the Tigers welcome William & Mary to SECU Arena on Friday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
