TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University swimming and diving teams return home to Burdick Pool to host Georgetown in their home openers on Saturday. The dual meet will begin at 10 a.m. with diving events, followed by swimming at 1 p.m.
Meet Coverage
The dual meet will take place at Burdick Pool. Admission is free but fans are encouraged to arrive early as seating will be limited. Fans can follow the meet on the Meet Mobile app.
The Series
This will be the 22
nd meeting between the Tigers and Hoyas on the men's side. It will be the 15
th meeting between the women's squads. The Towson men hold a 14-7 series advantage over the Hoyas. On the women's side, Towson leads the series 10-4. Last season, the men won 180-118 while the women were narrowly defeated, falling 141-121.
Mid-Major Rankings
As CollegeSwimming released its first rankings of the 2016-17 season, the Tiger squads found spots on both the Division I and Division I Mid-Major rankings. Among all Division I programs, the men's team is No. 43 and the women are No. 49. The Tiger men are ranked No. 19 while the women are in at the No. 22 spot on the Division I Mid-Major Rankings.
Georgetown's women are ranked No. 47 among all Division I programs. On the Mid-Major rankings, the Hoya men are No. 30 and the women are No. 21.
I'm Honored
Two Tigers were recognized for their performances at Penn State.
Kelsey Jehl was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Diver of the Week for placing second in the three-meter dive and fifth in the one-meter event. The honors were the first of her career and the first weekly diving nod for Towson since Oct. 6, 2015.
Jack Saunderson was tabbed as Towson's Male Student-Athlete of the Week. This is the second time Saunderson has received the weekly award (Feb. 29, 2016). Saunderson won both the 100- and 200-meter butterflies and swam on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay. Saunderson was also selected as a conference swimmer of the week by CollegeSwimming. The website selects national collegiate swimmers of the week and a swimmer of the week from the 42 different conferences.
In Its Season Opener
Towson dropped its season openers at Penn State on both the men's and women's side. The Tiger men fell 171-117 to the Nittany Lions, winning four events and recording seven personal bests. Towson's women won two events and logged four personal-bests as the team dropped a 179-110 decision to Penn State.
Better at Home
The Tigers swim exceptionally well inside the friendly confines of Burdick Pool over the last few seasons. Entering Saturday's meet, the women have won 19 straight dual meets, with its last loss coming against Maryland on Jan. 7, 2012. Over the last five seasons, the Tiger women are 19-1 at home. Towson's men had a 15-meet win streak snapped last season in its home finale against Delaware. The men's squad is 16-6 over the last five season at home.
Fresh Faces
Fans will see a number of new faces on the pool deck this season. The men's team added seven freshmen to its roster and the women's team added nine freshmen. In addition, the program has two new faces on the coaching staff.
Ryan Hunt enters his first season as the Tigers' diving coach and Jamie Keily has been added as an assistant coach.
Reigning Rookies of the Year
When the CAA announced its end-of-the-year awards for swimming last April, Towson won two major awards for the first time. Saunderson became the first Tiger to earn Men's Rookie Swimmer of the Year while
Emily Wilson was the first to be named Women's Rookie Diver of the Year.
Olympic Trials
Two current swimmers competed at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials over the summer.
Nick Breschi competed in the 100-long course meter (LCM) backstroke and Saunderson competed in the 200-lcm butterfly. The duo were the first members of the men's team to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials since Aaron Krause qualified in 2004.
