Opening Draw: The Towson women's lacrosse team hits the road for the first time in 2016 this weekend. Towson travels to Jacksonville on Saturday, Feb. 13. Opening draw from Southern Oak Stadium is set for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3. Links to that broadcast and live stats can be found on TowsonTigers.com.
Updating the Tigers: A stingy defense and a balanced attack led the Tigers to a 9-1 win over Monmouth in the season opener on Wednesday. Freshman goalkeeper
Angie Benson made five saves in her career debut. Benson's efforts coupled with 14 caused turnovers by the Tigers limited Monmouth to just one goal. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Montalbano forced four caused turnovers. On the offensive end, seven Tigers scored in the game. Sophomores
Jenna Kerr and
Emily Gillingham each scored twice in the game. Freshman attacker
Carly Tellekamp dished out a pair of assists.
Scouting Jacksonville: Jacksonville suffered a tough 18-5 loss to No. 11 Notre Dame in its season opener. Five different Dolphins scored in the game. The Dolphins were 2-for-2 on free position shots in the game as
Ashtyn Hiron and
Hannah Wilcox scored those goals.
Erika Brager turned in a strong defensive game in the opener. She had two ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers. In addition to her goal, Hiron added two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Kaylyn Kearns made 13 saves in goal while also collecting a team-high four ground balls.
Towson-Jacksonville Series History: Saturday's game will be the first ever meeting between the Tigers and the Dolphins. Jacksonville is the first of two Atlantic Sun schools the Tigers will face this season (Stetson on March 11). The Tigers have faced one other member of the Atlantic Sun before as Old Dominion use to be a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Jacksonville is the first of three teams that the Tigers will face for the first time ever this season (Jacksonville, Florida, Stetson).
All About the Defense: The Tigers turned in a strong defensive performance in the season opener. Towson surrendered just one goal to Monmouth on Wednesday. It was the first time since 1990 and the 10th time in program history that the Tigers held an opponent to a single goal in a game. The school record for fewest goals in a game is zero, that happened five times all in the early 1980's.
You'll Always Remember Your First Time: Several freshmen and a sophomore transfer made their Tiger debuts successful on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman attacker
Carly Tellekamp, sophomore transfer defender
Tianna Wallpher and freshman goalkeeper
Angie Benson all earned the start in their Towson debut. Tellekamp had a team-high two assists and a caused turnover while Wallpher contributed two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Benson recorded five saves. Freshmen
Natalie Sulmonte and
Katie Sciandra each had an impact off the bench. Sulmonte scored a goal and recorded a draw control while Sciandra had an assist and a caused turnover.
And The Streak Goes On...Sophomore
Kaitlyn Montalbano is one of four Tigers to carry a point streak into Saturday's game. Montalbano has recorded a point in six straight games, dating back to the end of last season. Redshirt junior
Michelle Gildea, junior
Michaela Duranti and sophomore
Emily Gillingham have all recorded a point in two straight games, dating back to the end of last season.
I'll Take That: The Tigers were busy all over the field against Monmouth. Towson recorded 14 caused turnovers in the game. It was the most caused turnovers by a Tiger squad since the 2013 season when they had 14 caused turnovers against Monmouth. Eight Tigers recorded at least one caused turnover in the game. That group was led by sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Montalbano, who had a career-high four.
Up Next: Towson returns home to host UMBC on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m.
