Tigers Host UMBC on Wednesday Afternoon

Opening Draw: The Towson women's lacrosse team returns home Wednesday for its third game of the season. The Tigers welcome local rival UMBC to Johnny Unitas Stadium, where opening draw is set for 4 p.m. Towson Sports Network will broadcast the game with Ben Rosenbaum handling the call of the action.

Updating the Tigers: Towson improved to 2-0 on the year with a 10-9 overtime victory at Jacksonville on Saturday. In a back-and-forth affair it was freshman attacker Carly Tellekamp providing the game-winning goal. Tellekamp and sophomore midfielder Emily Gillingham each scored three goals in the game. Gillingham leads the Tigers on the season with five goals. Tellekamp is tied for the team lead in points with three goals and two assists. Redshirt senior defender Nadia Podo has picked up a team-best seven ground balls while three Tigers have recorded four caused turnovers in the early going. Freshman Angie Benson has been solid in goal, posting a 4.90 goals against average and a .565 save percentage.

Scouting UMBC: UMBC is playing its season opener as it visits the Tigers Wednesday. Sam Nolan will lead the Retrievers offensive charge this season. She had 38 points last year on 22 goals and 16 assists. Jennie Milligan is the team's returning leading goal scorer with 23 tallies last season. The Retrievers will look to Caitlin Miller for help as she had 78 draw controls and 34 ground balls. Megan Flock led the team with 17 caused turnovers last season. Kelsey Major is back in goal after posting a 10.06 goals against average and a .409 save percentage last season.

Towson-UMBC Series History: Wednesday's game will be the 43rd all-time meeting between two schools that are seperated by just 20 miles. Towson leads the match-up 35-7, and has won four straight, after an 11-6 victory last year in a game played at UMBC. Sarah Maloof scored the first three goals of that game and gave the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Carolyn Jamison had two goals for the Retrievers.

National Recognition: Freshman attacker Carly Tellekamp certainly made an impact in her first two games as a Tiger. Tellekamp was named the ILWomen.com National Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. She had three goals in the win over Jacksonville, including the game-winning goal in overtime. She also added two assists and a caused turnover in the win over Monmouth.

I'm Honored: Freshman goalkeeper Angie Benson added to the Tigers' list of awards on Tuesday as she was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week. Benson made five saves while surrendering just one goal in the season opener against Monmouth. She added eight saves, three ground balls and a caused turnover in the overtime victory at Jacksonville.

Hats Off to You: A pair of Tigers recorded their first career hat tricks on Saturday at Jacksonville. Freshman attacker Carly Tellekamp scored the game's first two goals and then added the game-winner in overtime for her hat trick. Sophomore midfielder Emily Gillingham scored a pair of first half goals and then tallied the game-tying goal with 10 minutes to play in regulation.

2-0: The Tigers improved to 2-0 with the win over Jacksonville on Saturday. It marked the third straight season, the Tigers have opened the season 2-0 under Head Coach Sonia LaMonica. It is also the fourth time in the last six years that the Tigers have opened the season at least 2-0 under LaMonica. The best start under LaMonica belongs to the 2012 squad that started the year 3-0 en route to a 16-4 mark.

And the streak goes on...Sophomore Kaitlyn Montalbano is one of five Tigers to carry a point streak into today's game. Montalbano has recorded a point in seven straight games, dating back to the end of last season. Redshirt junior Michelle Gildea, and sophomore Emily Gillingham have recorded a point in three straight games, dating back to the end of last season. Freshmen Carly Tellekamp and Katie Sciandra both have a point in each of their first two collegiate games.

What's Next? Towson is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 28 when the Tigers visit Loyola for a 1 p.m. game.
