Towson-Loyola Series History: Sunday's game will be the 43rd meeting all-time between the two schools seperated by just 3.5 miles. The Greyhounds lead the match-up, 32-10 following a 15-5 victory last year and have won three straight. Towson's last win in the series came in the 2012 season by a 7-6 score at Loyola. Last year when the two teams met in Towson, the Tigers got a pair of goals from
Andi Raymond and
Emily Gillingham while
Annie Thomas led all scorers with four goals and three assists.
Monty has Memorable Day: Sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Montalbano had a career day for the Tigers in the win over UMBC. Montalbano tallied a career-high six points in the game. She had a career-high four goals while registering her first career hat trick Montalbano also matched her career-high with two assists against the Retrievers.
I'm Honored: For the second straight week, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week award went to a member of the black and gold. Freshman attacker
Carly Tellekamp earned the accolades after scoring a pair of goals in the win over UMBC and adding a pair of ground balls. It was Tellekamp's second honor of the season after being named the ILWomen.com National Rookie of the Week on Feb. 16.
Just the Way She Drew It Up: Sophomore midfielder
Emily Gillingham had a big day and helped the Tigers dominate the play in the circle against UMBC. Towson held a 15-5 advantage in draw controls in the game, thanks in part to Gillingham who won a career-high six draw controls in the game. It was the most draw controls by a Tiger since
Andi Raymond had seven draw controls in the overtime contest against Johns Hopkins last April.
A Win Sunday Would... A win Sunday would give the Tigers several things:
- their first win over Loyola since the 2012 season
- improve their record to 4-0 marking the best start to a season under head coach
Sonia LaMonica - their first win over a ranked opponent since Feb. 22, 2014 against then No. 10 Georgetown.
And the streak goes on... Sophomore
Kaitlyn Montalbano is one of five Tigers to carry a point streak into today's game. Montalbano has recorded a point in eight-straight games dating back to the end of last season. Redshirt junior
Michelle Gildea and sophomore
Emily Gillingham have recorded a point in four-straight games dating back to the end of last season. Freshmen
Carly Tellekamp and
Katie Sciandra both have a point in each of their first three collegiate games.
All About the Defense: While the Tiger offense has gained alot of recognition in the first three games, the Tiger defense has stepped up in a big way. Towson has held all three of its opponents so far to under 10 goals. In two of those three games, the Tigers have helld their opponent to under five goals. Through games played on Wednesday, the Tigers had the third best scoring defense in the nation (4.67 goals per game).
What's Next? Towson is back in action on Saturday, March 5 when the Tigers welcome Georgetown to Unitas Stadium at 3 p.m. That will be part of a doubleheader day as the Towson men's team will take the field at 12 noon.
