TOWSON, Md. – Ladies, start your engines.
Â
This weekend's critical three-game Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series between Delaware and Towson will be the softball equivalent of the Indianapolis 500 and Penn Relays. With 168 stolen bases between them, the Tigers and Blue Hens swoosh around the bases faster than cars in the movie "The Fast And Furious." Towson leads the CAA in doubles and home runs while Delaware is second in the conference in triples.
Â
Proving that larceny can be lucrative, the Tigers and Blue Hens lead the conference in stolen bases by relentlessly turning the base paths into a carousel. The only thing that will be missing this weekend from the Towson Softball Stadium will be a checkered flag and a baton.
Â
Individually, this series features five of the top 10 stolen base leaders in the CAA.
Â
Towson's
Olivia Yarbrough and
Kendyl Scott along with Delaware's Leanna Gearhart, Gabby Klecko and Mattie Nuccio have evolved into blazing base burglars while terrorizing harried catchers this season. Delaware's speedy triumvirate of Gearhart, Klecko and Nuccio have combined for 77 stolen bases, eight more than Towson's entire team.
Â
SPECIAL GUESTS: Towson will host its annual Parkville Rec Day on Saturday as the Tigers welcome local youth softball teams. On Sunday, Towson will host its Lutherville-Timonium Recreational Council (LTRC) Day. On both days, there will be giveaways such as shirts, autographed posters, stress balls, cups and rally towels. In addition there will be family-friendly activities that will include a moon bounce, face painter and balloon artist.

Â
HISTORY AGAINST DELAWARE: The Tigers have won two out of three games from the Blue Hens in each of the last two seasons. Overall, the Tigers are 52-55 against the Blue Hens.
Â
LAST TIME OUT FOR TOWSON: The Tigers split a non-conference doubleheader against Villanova Tuesday afternoon. After dropping the first game, 3-2, the Tigers rallied from a four-run deficit to win the nightcap, 11-9. In the second game,
Brook Miko finished a triple shy of the cycle and had four RBIs. The Tigers hit four homers (
Cassidy Meyer,
Daria Edwards,
Holiday Cahill and Miko).
Megan Dejter was the winning pitcher as she tossed 3.2 innings of strong relief.
Â
STRACHER STILL SUPER: Towson's
Shelby Stracher leads the CAA in batting average (.420), slugging percentage (.824), RBIs (53), home runs (14), total bases (108) and sacrifice flies (five). She's second in runs scored with 43. Nationally, Stracher is ranked among the top 20 in sacrifice flies (sixth), RBIs (10th) and slugging percentage (18th). She is on the verge of adding a pair of single-season team records to her home run mark. Stracher needs one RBI to surpass
Missy McCormick, one sacrifice fly to pass Julia Cappelli and Keely Walsh as well as five runs to supplant Mindy Bean in those categories.
Â
OFFENSIVE SUPERIORITY: Towson is among the CAA leaders in numerous offensive categories. The Tigers lead the conference in runs scored (276), RBIs (250), doubles (72), home runs (56) and total bases (606). Towson is second in the CAA in slugging percentage (.515) and stolen bases (69). The Tigers are third in batting average (.299) and on-base percentage (.378).
Â

Delaware has five batters with averages above .300 led by Mariah Kondravy's .389 average. Gearhart (.364), Klecko (.331), Nuccio (.322) and Hannah George (.314) have been formidable forces in the Blue Hens lineup this season. Anna Steinmetz is second in the CAA in home runs with 11. Kondravy leads UD with 39 RBIs and Steinmetz has 38 RBIs. Gearhart has eight triples on the year, one shy of the Division I lead.
