Updating the Tigers: Towson ran its win streak to three straight games with victories over Georgetown and Loyola last week. In the win over the Greyhounds, junior
Emily Gillingham led the charge with five goals and five draw controls while sophomore
Natalie Sulmonte had three goals and five draw controls. Senior
Samantha Brookhart leads a balanced Towson attack that has seen five players record 10 or more points through five games. Brookhart has tallied five goals and a team-high 11 assists for 16 points. Gillingham has struck for a team-high 15 goals. Sulmonte adds 11 goals and four assists to go along with a team-best 17 draw controls. Freshman
Sami Chenoweth is among the team leaders on defense with 10 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. Sophomore
Angie Benson made three saves against Loyola and carries a 9.00 goals against average and a .483 save percentage into the weekend.
Scouting Florida: The Gators have won two straight games following a 21-14 win at Jacksonville Monday night.
Mollie Stevens had three goals and 11 draw controls in the contest for Florida.
Lindsey Ronbeck added four goals, an assist and three draw controls in the victory. Stevens paces Florida with 10 goals and two assists and has pulled down a team-high 18 draw controls.
Shayna Pirreca has added 10 goals and one assist.
Taylor Bresnahan leads the defense with nine groundballs and seven caused turnovers.
Haley Hicklen has posted an 11.78 goals against average and a .484 save percentage.
Towson-Florida Series History: It will be just the second meeting all-time between the Tigers and Gators. Last year when the two squads met in Gainesville, Florida outscored the Tigers by five in the second half to pull away and claim the 15-7 victory.
Sammi Burgess had three goals and two assists for the Gators while
Kaitlyn Montalbano led Towson with three goals.
I'm Honored: After helping the Tigers hold a pair of opponents to single-digits on the scoreboard, junior defender
Tianna Wallpher was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Wallpher finished last week with six caused turnovers and five groundballs while adding two draw controls. Wallpher is the third Tiger defender and fourth straight Towson player to be honored by the CAA this season (
Kelly McQuilkin-Feb. 7,
Sami Chenoweth-Feb. 14,
Carly Tellekamp-Feb. 21).
Just the Way We Drew It Up: One of the keys to success for the Tigers against Loyola was their ability to dominate in the draw circle. Towson won 17 of the game's 25 draw controls, including the first 10 draws of the game. Junior
Emily Gillingham and sophomore
Natalie Sulmonte each won five draw controls to lead the Tigers' efforts. Since the start of the 2015 season the Tigers are 9-2 when they win 15 or more draw controls in a game including 2-0 this season.
Balanced Attack: The Towson offense has demonstrated a balanced attack through its first five games. Twelve Tigers have recorded at least one point. Towson has five players with 10 or more points and four of those five have recorded 15 or more points this season. Through Thursday's games only four teams, in either the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Poll or Cascade Media Poll, had more players with 10 or more points (Stanford-7, Notre Dame-7, Virginia Tech-6, James Madison-6). Virginia Tech and Notre Dame have each played seven or more games. Of teams ranked in the top 20 of either poll, Towson was tied with Notre Dame and Virginia Tech for the most players with 15 or more points.
Watch Me: Towson junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Montalbano picked up another accolade on Tuesday night. Montalbano was named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List becoming the first Tiger since
Andi Raymond and
Kelsea Donnelly in 2015 to make the initial list of the 50 best players in the country. So far this season she has 10 points (8g, 2a), seven groundballs, seven draw controls and a caused turnover.
Hats Off to You: A pair of Tigers picked up hat tricks in the win over Loyola. Junior midfielder
Emily Gillingham had a career-best five goals while sophomore
Natalie Sulmonte posted three goals. For Gillingham, it was the second time this season she has posted a hat trick and re-established her career-high in goals. She now has five career hat tricks. Sulmonte's hat trick was her second straight and seventh of her career.
Helping Ourselves: For the third straight game and fourth time this season, the Tigers recorded double-digit caused turnovers, finishing with 11 against the Greyhounds. Junior
Tianna Wallpher matched her career-high with four caused turnovers while freshman
Sami Chenoweth added a pair. Towson now has 52 caused turnovers in five games. Chenoweth and senior
Kelly McQuilkin are tied for the team lead with 10 caused turnovers each. Dating back to the start of the 2016 season, the Tigers are 9-2 when they force double-digit caused turnovers in a game.
What's Next? Towson returns to action on Sunday, March 12 when the Tigers host Stetson at noon. That will be the Tigers' Breast Cancer Awareness game and any fan that wears pink to support the cause can purchase a $5 ticket that day.
