Opening Draw: The No. 17/20 Towson University women's lacrosse team wraps up the regular season when it hosts local rival Johns Hopkins on Sunday, April 30. Opening draw from Unitas Stadium is set for noon. Towson Sports Network's
Ben Rosenbaum will have audio coverage of the game starting at 11:45 a.m. Links to live stats and the video feed can be found on the schedule page of TowsonTigers.com. Fans can also follow the Tigers on Twitter (
@Towson_WLAX) for updates.
Updating the Tigers: A balanced offensive attack (three players with hat tricks) and a dominating defensive effort (20 caused turnovers) led Towson to a 14-7 win over Drexel last time out. The Tigers have showcased a balanced attack all season long as three players have 50 plus points and five players have 35 or more points this season. Senior attacker
Samantha Brookhart leads the team in points (59) and assists (43). Sophomore attacker
Natalie Sulmonte and sophomore attacker
Carly Tellekamp have each tallied 50 or more points this season. Sulmonte has 38 goals and 16 assists for 54 points while Tellekamp has a team-high 44 goals and eight assists for 52 points. Sulmonte has also pulled down a team-high 70 draw controls. Junior defender
Tianna Wallpher has scooped up a team-high 44 ground balls. Freshman defender
Olivia Conti leads the squad with 45 caused turnovers. Sophomore
Angie Benson carries a 8.98 goals against average and a .492 save percentage into Sunday's game.
Scouting Johns Hopkins: The Blue Jays have won two straight games following a 17-9 victory over Rutgers on Thursday night which clinched a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. Johns Hopkins saw seven players score in that game including
Haley Schweizer, who finished with a team-high five goals and an assist. Schweizer powers the offense this season with 33 goals and nine assists for 42 points.
Maggie Schneidereith has dished out a team-best 20 assists to go along with 19 goals.
Emily Kenul has a team-high 35 draw controls while
Claudia Flister has a team-high 20 caused turnovers.
Caroline Federico brings a 9.49 goals against average and a .473 save percentage into the contest. She has also corralled a team-high 29 ground balls.
Towson-Johns Hopkins Series History: Sunday will be the 23rd meeting all-time between the two schools separated by just 4.8 miles. Hopkins holds a 14-8 advantage in the match-up, however the Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 9-4 victory when the two squads met last year at Homewood Field.
Carly Tellekamp led the Tigers with four goals and an assist while the defense held Hopkins scoreless for a stretch of 39:43.
Thank You Seniors! The Tigers will take time to honor their senior class that includes
Colby Unkle,
Samantha Brookhart,
Kelly McQuilkin,
Jordan Clarke and
Michaela Duranti along with fifth-year seniors
Alyssa Ferro and
Michelle Gildea before Sunday's game. This year's class is responsible for 57 wins, three Colonial Athletic Assoication (CAA) Championships and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. This group will lead the Tigers in their title defense next week.
I'm Honored: Sophomore
Angie Benson was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Benson became the fourth Tiger to take home defensive player of the week accolades after posting a 6.00 goals against average and a .586 save percentage which helped the Tigers beat Delaware and Drexel. Benson made eight saves against the Blue Hens, including seven in the second half and nine saves versus the Dragons.
Looking for a Sweep: The Tigers enter the game against Johns Hopkins looking for a sweep of their Greater Baltimore area rivals. Towson already defeated UMBC (20-5 on Feb. 15) and Loyola (15-8 on Feb. 26). If the Tigers could beat the Blue Jays, it would mark the second straight year and third time in program history that Towson defeated all three of those schools in the same season.
Miss Assist: Senior attacker
Samantha Brookhart finished with four assists on Sunday versus Drexel. It was Brookhart's 11th game this season with multiple assists and raised her season total to 43 helpers. With that performance Brookhart tied
Meggie McNamara's school record for single-season assists. She is tied for fifth on the CAA single-season assists list. The CAA record for single-season assists is 49 set during the 2012 season. Brookhart has 89 career assists, which ranks second in school history and 10th in CAA history. She needs six more assists to tie the Towson record.
Causing Havoc on Defense: One of the keys to success for the Tigers this season has been their ability to create caused turnovers. Towson recorded a caused turnover on 20 of Drexel's 25 turnovers last Sunday. That was a season-high for the Tigers and the most caused turnovers by a Tiger squad since the 2010 team had 22 against George Washington. Towson has recorded 196 caused turnovers this season with 19 players recording at least one. Every member of the Tigers starting defense has at least 14 caused turnovers this season. Towson is averaging 12.25 caused turnovers per game, which ranks sixth in the nation.
Hats Off to You: A trio of Tigers recorded hat tricks in the 14-7 win over Drexel last time out. Junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Montalbano posted her second straight hat trick and fifth of the season. She has 14 hat tricks for her career. Sophomore attacker
Natalie Sulmonte had her team-leading ninth hat trick of the season. She now has 14 three-goal games in her career. Sophomore attacker
Carly Tellekamp contributed her sixth hat trick of the season in the win over the Dragons. She has 10 hat tricks in her career.
Conti Caused That: Freshman defender
Olivia Conti has proven to be a menace for opposing offenses during her brief Towson career. Conti had three caused turnovers on Sunday afternoon against Drexel which raised her season total to 45 caused turnovers. Conti is just the second player in program history to record 40 or more caused turnovers in a single-season (
Hillary Fratzke - 47 in 2008 and 41 in 2007). Conti needs just three more caused turnovers to break the school and CAA record for single-season caused turnovers. She ranks second in the CAA and among the top 10 in the nation while averaging 2.81 per game.
What's Next? Towson is back in action when the CAA semifinals begin on Friday, May 5. The Tigers will take on the number three seed, which is to be determined, at 6:30 p.m.
