Updating the Tigers: Senior attacker
Samantha Brookhart and junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Montalbano combined for nine goals and five assists to lead the Tigers to a 14-11 win over William & Mary on Friday night. The Tigers have a balanced offensive attack as four players have 30 or more points this season. Brookhart leads the team in points (47) and assists (31). Sophomore attacker
Natalie Sulmonte and fellow sophomore attacker
Carly Tellekamp have each recorded 30 or more points this season. Sulmonte has 28 goals and 13 assists for 41 points while Tellekamp has a team-high 30 goals and seven assists for 37 points. Sulmonte has pulled down a team-high 50 draw controls. Junior defender
Tianna Wallpher has scooped up a team-high 35 ground balls. Freshman defender
Olivia Conti leads the squad with 33 caused turnovers. Sophomore
Angie Benson carries a 8.78 goals against average and a .496 save percentage into the weekend.
Scouting Elon: Elon is coming off a tough 14-5 loss at No. 18 James Madison on Friday night.
Stephanie Asher was the only member of the Phoenix to post multiple points in the game, contributing a goal and an assist. Asher paces the Elon offense on the season with 47 points on 40 goals and seven assists.
Sloane Kessler has a team-best 18 assists and 18 goals for 36 points. Asher has added a team-high 22 draw controls.
Rachel Ramirez has a 9.57 goals against average and a .466 save percentage in cage. She also leads the team with 37 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers.
Towson-Elon Series History: Towson and Elon will be meeting for the fourth time in the all-time series. The Tigers have won each of the first three meetings. Last year Towson claimed an 11-9 win at Elon in the regular season and an 8-6 victory when the two teams met in the CAA semifinals.
Samantha Brookhart led the Tigers in the semifinals with a goal and two assists while
Stephanie Asher had four goals for the Phoenix.
Hats Off to You: The Tigers received a pair of hat trick performances on Friday night. Junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Montalbano recorded a hat trick in the first half and finished with six goals in the game for her "sock trick." Montalbano is the second Tiger to post a six-goal game this season (
Carly Tellekamp - at UMBC). It was Montalbano's second hat trick of the season. Senior attacker
Samantha Brookhart added three goals for her first hat trick of the season and first hat trick since 2015.
Just the Way She Drew It Up: Sophomore attacker
Natalie Sulmonte led the Tigers with six draw controls against William & Mary. That raised Sulmonte's season total to 50 draw controls, just one off her total from a year ago. Sulmonte now has 101 draw controls for her career. She moved into the top 10 for career draw controls at Towson with her performance against William & Mary. Sulmonte is just the third player in program history to crack the top 10 list as a sophomore or younger (
Hillary Fratzke and
Becky Trumbo).
I'll Take That: Freshman defender
Olivia Conti had a pair of caused turnovers versus William & Mary which raised her season total to 33 caused turnovers. Conti is tied for third on the single-season top 10. She is just the second freshman to crack the single-season top 10 at Towson. The other freshman to do was
Alexa Demski, who had 30 caused turnovers in 2010.
Ground Ball Machine: One of the keys to success for the Tigers this season has been corralling the loose balls. Towson has recorded 20 or more ground balls in five games this season and has posted a win in each of those contests. On Friday night, the Tigers had 23 ground balls as 11 Tigers contributed at least one ground ball. Redshirt senior defender
Michelle Gildea led the way with four ground balls.
Helping Ourselves: One of the keys to success for the Tigers this season has been their ability to force their opponents into turnovers. Towson opponents have turned the ball over 246 times in twelve games and 148 of those have been caused by the Tigers. Towson has recorded 10 or more caused turnovers in ten games this season, including a season-high 18 caused turnovers against Notre Dame. Entering play this weekend, the Tigers were ranked first in the CAA and among the top 10 in the nation for caused turnovers per game. Towson is now averaging 12. 2 caused turnovers per game. Four Tigers have recorded 10 or more caused turnovers this season. Freshman
Olivia Conti leads the team with 33 caused turnovers and was 11th nationally entering the weekend while averaging 2.45 caused turnovers per game. Dating back to the start of the 2016 season, the Tigers are 13-4 when they force double-digit caused turnovers in a game.
Handing Out the Helpers: Senior attacker
Samantha Brookhart has a knack for finding her open teammates during her Tiger career. Brookhart had an four assists against William & Mary, which raised her season total to 31. Brookhart entered play this weekend ranked ninth nationally for assists. She has nine multiple assist games this season and 22 in her career. Earlier this year, Brookhart tied the school single-game record and set the CAA single-game record with six helpers in a game. Brookhart enters play Sunday with 73 career assists. She is currently fourth in career history at Towson. Brookhart needs six more assists to move into the top three for career assists at Towson.
