Late Rally Not Enough Against Patriots

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team nearly erased a seven-run deficit before falling 10-6 to George Mason Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How it Happened
  • The Patriots (22-24) took advantage of four free passes and a hit batter to push across seven runs in the frame.  They collected two hits in the inning, one of which was a bases-clearing double off the bat of Trevor Kelly.
  • Right hander Brandyn Vogtsberger came out of the bullpen and got the final out of the first inning before keeping the Patriots off the board over the next four innings.
  • He only surrendered one unearned run in his career-high 6.1 innings of work.  He allowed just four hits and struck out five.
  • The Tigers (16-26) got on the board in the fifth on a groundout off the bat of Noah Cabrera.
  • After Mason scored a run in the top of the sixth, Richie Palacios came back in the home half of the inning with a solo blast to right field that landed on Towsonton Blvd.
  • The Tigers continued their comeback in the seventh inning after Matt Smith and Tristan Howerton walked.  Andrew Cassard doubled just inside the bag at third to score one run and Palacios hit the next pitch through the left side to score another run.
  • John Drexel drove in two more runs with a double that landed on the chalk deep in the right field corner.
  • The Patriots stretched their advantage back to four runs with a pair of runs in the eighth inning.
  • Palacios led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Drexel came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Cassard also added two hits out of the leadoff spot.
  • Alex Cuas (1-4) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on four walks and two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
  • Bryce Nightengale (2-3) allowed two runs on five hits to pick up the win.
  • Jared DiCesare (4) did not allow a hit over the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.
