Kicking Off
It's George Week for the Tigers as they head to our nation's capital on Thursday for a clash with George Washington (5 p.m.), followed by a home game on Sunday against CAA defector George Mason (2 p.m.). Towson split its results last week, winning on the road at Lehigh, but faltering in overtime against Saint Joseph's.
Scouting the Tigers
The Tigers had a four-goal week last week, including a three-goal burst against Saint Joseph's. Junior forward McKenzie McCaull paces Towson with six points (2g, 2a) while classmate Sarah Quick is tied for the goal lead (2g). Maddie Bové, Evelyn Neidert and Elizabeth Coletti have potted one goal apiece, with the first two adding assists as well. Towson's offense doesn't play a volume shooting game, but opts for efficiency; the Tigers have put 26 of their 46 total shots on goal (.565). Conversely, opponents have taken 90 total shots, but landed just 38 on goal (.422). Redshirt senior goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao has turned aside 32 opponent attempts this year, carrying a .842 save percentage and a 0.96 goals against average. The fifth-year keeper has three clean sheets to her credit so far in 2017.
The Series: George Washington (1-2-1, 0-0-0 A10)
Towson and George Washington will meet in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2002 and 2003 when they clash Thursday night. It will be the Tigers' first trip to the GW Soccer Field since the 2009 season. The Colonials lead the all-time series 4-2-0, but Towson blanked visiting George Washington 2-0 last season. Towson is hunting its first-ever win over the Colonials in Washington, D.C.
The Series: George Mason (0-5-0, 0-0-0 A10)
Sunday sees two former CAA opponents square off as George Mason makes its first appearance in Towson since 2010. The two sides competed as conference foes from 2002 until the Patriots departed the league for the Atlantic 10 after the 2012 season. George Mason leads the all-time series 11-1-0. The Tigers are looking to snap a nine-game slide against the Patriots and collect their first win since a 1-0 clean sheet in 2003, also at home for the Tigers.

Last Time Out vs. George Washington
Towson wrapped up its 2016 nonconference schedule with a 2-0 win over the visiting Colonials. The Tigers scored their goals 20 minutes apart as Moriah Wigley tallied the game-winner in the 40th minute, followed by a security marker from Evelyn Neidert. Tiger goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao was not forced to make a save in the shutout while her team controlled the pace. Towson out-shot George Washington 16-7.
Last Time Out vs. George Mason
After a scoreless first half, the Patriots came out in the second half and reeled off three goals in a 24 minute stretch to seal the Tigers' fate. George Mason out-shot Towson 15-8 in the contest at George Mason Stadium.
With a Win Thursday
- Towson would improve to 2-1-1 on the road this season and collect a third win in the last four games away from home.
- The Tigers would win back-to-back games over the Colonials for the first time in program history.
- Towson would win its first game in Washington, D.C. since Sept. 26, 2005 in a 2-1 double overtime victory at American University.
- The Tigers would win true back-to-back road games since knocking off Fairfield (Sept. 4) and Iona (Sept. 6) during the 2015 season.
- Towson would get its third road win of the season, the most nonconference road wins since the 2011 season (3-2-0).
With a Win Sunday…
- Towson would halt a nine-game slide against the Patriots, dating back to a 1-0 win at home on Oct. 26, 2003.
- The Tigers would get their first-ever nonconference win over George Mason.
- Towson would improve to 1-1-1 at the Tiger Soccer Complex this season.
- The Tigers would earn their second victory over a school from the Commonwealth of Virginia, coupled with a 1-0 win at Longwood (Aug. 24).
That Escalated Quickly
Entering last Sunday's game against Saint Joseph's, Towson was the only team in the CAA to hold every opponent to one goal or less in each game this season. Towson had also not scored more than one goal in a game, in spite of a 3-1-1 record entering the game.
That changed on Sunday as the two teams combined for seven goals. The Tigers got three goals from three different sources, including a career-best three points (1g, 1a) from McKenzie McCaull.
It's All About the... Georges?
This weekend, it won't be about the Benjamins for Towson women's soccer. It will be about the Georges. The Tigers take on George Washington (Sept. 7) and George Mason (Sept. 10) on the road and at home, respectively. Towson has not played a "George" school in back-to-back games since the end of 2008 against George Mason and the 2009 season opener at George Washington.
Road Warriors
Thursday sees the Tigers make their fifth road trip of the season as they head to Washington, D.C. Towson is currently 2-1-1 on the road, picking up a 1-0 win at Lehigh last Thursday. Towson's lone blemish on the road was a 1-0 loss at East Carolina (Aug. 27).
After Thursday's game, Towson will have the chance to play at the friendly confines of the Tiger Soccer Complex for the balance of September with five-straight home games. Three of those, including Sunday, will be nonconference games.
The Tigers have been much improved on the road this season. With a win on Thursday, Towson would pick up its third road win of the nonconference season. The Tigers have not won a trio of true nonconference road games in a single season since going 3-2-0 during the 2011 campaign. The last time the Tigers won multiple nonconference games on the road, they reached the CAA Championship Tournament, going 2-2-0 in 2015.
Long Way From Home
On Aug. 24 at Longwood, junior midfielder/forward Sarah Quick scored the first goal of her Tiger career, depositing what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Quick's hometown of Sarasota, Florida is 1,014 miles from campus, marking the second-longest distance a Tiger has traveled from her hometown to score a goal. Gabby Scricia, who listed her hometown as Jupiter, Florida, scored twice in 2014. Jupiter is just 20 miles further away from Towson University's campus than Sarasota.
However, Quick now has the distinction of being the Tiger from farthest away to score a game-winning goal, edging out fellow Floridian Evelyn Neidert (Lake Mary), whose hometown is 893 miles from campus. The latter had her first career game-winner on Aug. 20 in the 1-0 home-opening win against Loyola.
Movin' On Up
Redshirt senior goalie Taylor Sebolao has turned aside 32 shots in the early goings of 2017. Throughout her career, Sebolao has made 250 saves, which currently ranks her sixth all-time in program history. She trails Michelle Robinson's 257 for fifth all-time. Two weeks ago, Sebolao made 11 saves to surpass Yasmin Alter's mark of 229.
Longest Nonconference Road Trip
Last weekend's trek down south took Towson on its longest nonconference road trip of the season. The Tigers traveled roughly 230 miles on Wednesday from the Towson Center to Longwood University. After the 1-0 win on Aug. 24, the Tigers aimed for East Carolina, an additional 176 miles. On Sunday, the Tigers returned to Towson after a 335 mile trip from Greenville, North Carolina. The Tigers drove roughly 750 miles last weekend.
We Have That in Common(wealth)
Thursday's game in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania marked the second game the Tigers played in one of the country's four Commonwealths after playing in Farmville, Virginia the previous weekend at Longwood. The final Commonwealth will be an Oct. 19 game at Northeastern in Boston, Massachusetts. The only Commonwealth the Tigers will not play in this season is Kentucky.
Opposite Sides of the Country
Two freshmen joined the Tigers in 2017 with Afton Kalkoske and Hannah Warner matriculating to Towson this fall. Despite sharing a class, the pair have an entire country between their hometowns. Warner hails from nearby Bel Air, Maryland, roughly 20 miles from campus. Kalkoske arrived in the Greater Baltimore area from La Quinta, California, some 2,600 miles from Towson University.
Free Clinic: Monday, Oct. 9
Looking for something to do with the kids on Monday, Oct. 9 while schools are out? Fear not! Towson women's soccer has the solution.
On Columbus Day, the Tigers will host a free youth clinic for kids from kindergarten to eighth grade. The clinic will be held at the Tiger Soccer Complex from 9 a.m. until noon.
How much is the youth clinic? It's FREE to those who attend a home game between Sunday, Aug. 20 and Oct. 5. That's eight chances to register with Towson's fan development at all the Tigers' home games.
Can't make it to a game, but still want to attend? The Tigers are asking a $10 donation to the program in lieu of attendance at any game this season.
