Tigers Play Complete Game in Setback at No. 9 Loyola

BOX SCORE BALTIMORE – After a slow start to the 2018 season, the Towson University men's lacrosse team had its most-complete game of the year, but fell 12-8 at No. 9 Loyola University Maryland Wednesday afternoon.

Towson (1-3) get career days from two unlikely sources in redshirt freshman Shane Brennan, who had 12 saves, and senior faceoff specialist Steven Stillwell, who won 13 of his 17 draws off the bench.

Junior transfer Timmy Monahan had his best outing for the Tigers, finishing with five points on three goals and two helpers. Another Transfer Tiger, Jean-Luc Chetner, had a three-point day with two goals and one assist.

Loyola (3-1) was paced by a seven-point day from Pat Spencer, who scored four goals and added one assist. Kevin Lindley added three goals as well, while Loyola got all of its 18 points from starters.

How it Happened
  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring back-to-back goals 18 seconds apart, both from Lindley. Jay Drapeau had the first assist while Spencer fed the second off a faceoff.
  • Jon Mazza extended his point-scoring streak to six games as he hit Monahan with an over-the-top skip pass that the latter fired home low to cut the Loyola lead to 2-1.
  • With 3:40 to play in the first frame, Spencer made it a two-goal game as the Greyhounds held a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Loyola grabbed its largest lead of the first half on an Aidan Olmstead goal just 42 seconds into the fresh period.
  • Towson cut the lead back to two as Mazza spun the ball across the top of the crease to Monahan, who drew a defender and then kicked the ball over to Maloof for the unselfish play. Maloof fired home his fifth of the year at the 12:42 mark of the second.
  • After a blocked shot, Monahan came off the end line and slipped between his defender and the crease to pot his second of the day with 8:47 to play in the half.
  • After a Loyola extra-man goal from Drapeau at 4:46 of the second, Towson responded three minutes later as Chetner saw Monahan cutting towards the crease from X. The former hit the latter with a sharp pass as Towson made it 5-4 to finish off the opening 30 minutes.
  • John Duffy scored at 12:16 of the third quarter to extend Loyola's lead back to two, but that lead was trimmed at 9:48. Brendan Sunday dodged between to Greyhound defenders and took a slash across the chest, drawing a flag, but the 6-4 junior added insult to injury as he beat Stover low, making it 6-5 five minutes into the second half.
  • After back-to-back doorstop saves from Brennan, Spencer picked up a loose ball after a failed Tiger clear and scored to take the game to a 7-5 Loyola lead.
  • Slipping between two defenders, Chetner pulled Towson back within one with 94 seconds left in the third quarter as Towson finished the frame trailing 7-6.
  • Loyola ended a 10-minute scoring drought with 6:55 to play as Spencer came on strong in the fourth quarter. The junior had a hand in four of Loyola's five final goals of the game.
  • With five minutes to play, defenseman Sid Ewell picked up a faceoff win and missed a pass to shortstick defensive midfielder Zach Goodrich, but Monahan backed up the play and found Chetner streaking from the substitution box. Monahan drilled Chetner with the pass for Towson's final goal of the afternoon.

Behind the Numbers
  • It was a career outing for several Tigers as Brennan made a career-best 14 saves. In its last two games at the Ridley Athletic Complex, Towson has gotten a combined 30 saves from its goalkeepers, including 16 from another keeper who wore #2, Tyler White, in 2016.
  • Stillwell had a career-best 13 faceoff wins in 17 chances. The senior came off the bench in the second quarter as starting specialist Alex Woodall struggled early.
  • Monahan had the first hat trick of his career and marked the third-straight game the Tigers have had at least one player with a hat trick.
  • Towson struggled in the turnover department, giving up the ball 20 times. Loyola had just seven turnovers.
  • The Tigers went 0-for-4 on the extra-man, but limited Loyola to a pair of man-up goals on four chances.
