Inside Look: Bachelor Revises Towson Record Book

TOWSON, Md. – It's time to put William Bachelor's magnificent performance at this past week's Loyola Intercollegiate into historical perspective.

In finishing fourth individually with a score of 201, Bachelor etched his name into the Towson history books with an effort for the ages at the Palm Valley Golf Club. He is now the low scorer in relation to par in any tournament in Towson men's golf history at 15 under par.

"Coach (Mike) Larkin and I found out on the plane ride back to Towson and we were pretty excited," said Bachelor when he learned of the achievement. "I had no clue that it was a record until then. I was pumped and felt proud of the accomplishment. There have been a ton of great golfers such as Jeff Castle, Jimmy Grem, Coach Larkin, and Billy Wingerd and to be on the same list as them is awesome."

Bachelor shot rounds of 68-65-68, which left him two strokes out of a playoff. The 65 was a career low for Bachelor, and was also the third lowest round in relation to par by a Towson men's golfer in program history. Bachelor was locked in during the second round as he had five birdies, along with an eagle on the 11th hole.

"I was pretty excited for Bach when we figured out it was a school record," Towson head coach Mike Larkin said. "It's a special moment when something like that happens, and one that I'm sure he'll remember for a long time."

Bachelor broke the previous mark of 13 under par, which was held by current assistant coach Jeff Castle, who still holds the program record for lowest three round score of 200. Castle's 200 was in a tournament played on a Par 71 course, while Bachelor's 201 in Arizona was on a Par 72. Bachelor was also 11 under par after 36 holes, which tied him with Jimmy Grem for another program record. Larkin had a front row seat to Castle's greatness as they were teammates.

"I'm in a unique position, having played on the team with Jeff here when he set the previous record of 13 under back in 2004," Larkin said. "To this day he's one of the best players I've ever played with. So any time you're breaking a record with his name attached to it, you know you're doing well. Hopefully this gets our guys looking forward to trying to take that number even lower the next time they tee it up."

While Bachelor was the headliner during the week, the Tigers also had some other good performances. Spencer Alexander fired a six-under 66 in the final round, to tie his career low. Arthur Muller shot a career low two-under 70 in the second round. Kobdech Rodrat finished off the tournament with an even par 72.

As a team, Towson's eight under final round score of 280 tied for the second lowest single round score in relation to par in team history. The Tigers were also five under par for a tournament total of 859, which is the fifth best three round team score in relation to par in team history.

Towson will look to make some more history when it returns to the links on the last weekend of March when it competes in the Kingsmill Invitational on Sunday, March 25.

Breaking a mark held by Castle is special for Bachelor.

"Jeff Castle is a legend here at Towson," Bachelor said. "He is someone I really look up too. He also is the main reason I got to Towson. I was just a kid from California that wanted a chance to play college golf and it was Jeff that saw my potential. He has helped me a lot with my golf game and I owe him a lot. To break one of his records is unreal and I can only hope to become the golfer that he was for Towson."
