TOWSON, Md. – This weekend concludes the regular season for the Towson University field hockey team with home games on Friday and Sunday.
Tomorrow the Tigers host James Madison with the game set to begin at 2 p.m. and Sunday's Senior Day game will begin at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on the Towson Sports Network and admission is free to the TU Field Hockey Complex.
Scouting the Tigers
Towson is coming off a tough weekend on the road after falling to Hofstra on Sunday in a rainy game. Leading the Tiger offense are freshmen
Samantha Aljets and
Georgia Beachley with seven goals each, Aljets paces the Black and Gold with six assists this year. Sophomore
Kasey Bubel has been strong on the other side of the ball, she has three defensive saves in 2019. Between the posts, freshman
Tess Okkerse leads the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in saves with 102. As the Towson starting goalkeeper she has one shutout in her rookie season and holds a save percentage of .675.
Scouting the Dukes
James Madison comes to town with a 7-9 record, 2-2 in conference play. The Dukes are coming off a 4-1 win over Saint Francis at home on Sunday, but fell to Northeastern 3-1 on Friday. Leading the offense is redshirt-senior Miranda Rigg with seven goals and four assists. A handful of goalkeepers have started and played for JM, Kylie LeBlanc has the most minutes in the net for the Dukes with 380. LeBlanc has 31 saves on the season and has allowed 19 goals, she has two wins and two losses. As a team James Madison is averaging 1.56 goals per game and is second in the league in penalty corners with 94.
The JMU Series
Friday afternoon will be the 23
rd meeting between these two teams. James Madison leads the series 21-1, Towson has not earned a win over the Dukes in the last 15 meetings. In 2018 the Tigers traveled to Harrisonburg and fell 3-1, Erica McKay scored for the Tigers. The last time JMU came to Towson ended in a 7-2 victory for the Dukes.
Scouting the Tribe
William & Mary has a tough road test at No. 12 Delaware on Friday that will help break the current tie for first place in the CAA. The Tribe are coming off a 2-1 overtime win against Northeastern on Sunday and defeated then-No. 5 Louisville 2-1 in overtime last Thursday. In this week's poll William & Mary is ranked No. 23, it will be Towson's third ranked opponent of the season. Leading the offense is Christie van de Kamp, she has seven goals and seven assist this season for 21 points. In the net is Kimi Jones who has split some time with Morgan Connor. Jones has a .696 save percentage and 48 stops this year.
The William & Mary Series
Sunday will be the 26
th meeting between Towson and William & Mary. The Tribe hold a 21-3-1 series record and have won every matchup since the 2011 season. Towson's last win came on Oct. 9, 2011 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium, a 3-1 victory. Last season the Tigers traveled to Williamsburg and fell 6-0.
Senior Celebration & Alumnae Fun
Sunday the Towson field hockey team will celebrate Senior Day, recognizing senior
Carli Herman and
Nathalie Tortolero. Along with the celebration of current student-athletes, the team will be celebrating Alumnae Day after being rained out two weeks ago. There will be alumnae recognitions on the field and a bounce house outside.
Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area. For the seventh consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked No. 1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
