TOWSON, Md. – Towson University quarterback
Tom Flacco was a finalist for the 2019 Walter Payton Award and finished 13
th in the final voting, announced by STATS.
The voting results for the finalists who finished from fifth to 26
th place were released by STATS on Monday.
Flacco, is the lone Towson player to be a finalist in two different seasons. Flacco finished fifth in the final voting in 2018, being in the top-13 the last two years. Only one other player, James Robinson of Illinois State, was in the top-25 in both 2018 and 2019.
On the field, the 2019 All-CAA Second Team quarterback completed the regular season in the top-25 in each total offense and passing efficiency in all of FCS. The redshirt senior completed 60.4% of his passing for 2,831 yards and 22 touchdowns on just six interceptions. He also added 324 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
He finishes his Towson career with over 6,000 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns in his Towson career, spanning 24 games.
In Towson's history, David Meggett won the Walter Payton Award in 1988.
Terrance West (3
rd in 2013), Joe Lee (9
th in 1999) and Tony Vinson (3
rd in 1993) have all been finalists along with Flacco.
Flacco had been a Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List member along with
Shane Simpson, announced back in August.
Case Cookus of Northern Arizona, Pete Guerriero of Monmouth, Trey Lance of North Dakota State and Kevin Thomson of Sacramento State are the final four for the award, which will be announced on Jan. 10
