TOWSON, Md. – After 10 days off, the Towson University women's lacrosse team is set for a home game on Saturday afternoon against Yale. With the opening draw scheduled for 3 p.m., the team plays after a noon-start men's lacrosse game.
The theme for the game is Hometown Heroes with local first responders being celebrated. There will also be a post-game autograph signing by the team on team posters and the first responders will play a game of lacrosse amongst themselves following the game. Last Time Out
Towson is coming off a 12-8 loss at High Point last Wednesday evening. Senior
Natalie Sulmonte finished with a season-high five goals against the No. 24 Panthers while goalie
Kiley Keating grabbed 14 saves. The game was tied four times, the Tigers knotted the game 6-6 with 24:50 left. High Point took a one goal lead with just over 16 minutes left, before back-to-back goals from
Rayna Deltuva and Sulmonte took the first Towson lead 8-7. The Panthers scored the next five goals to take the win.
The Yale Series
This will be the third meeting between Towson and Yale. Last March, the Tigers took a 9-4 victory in New Haven led by
Carly Tellekamp with three goals. Towson leads the series 2-0 after a one-goal win over the Bulldogs in 1979.
Scouting the Tigers
The Tigers are led by
Natalie Sulmonte with 19 goals on the year. The senior has had three assists for 22 points, tying with sophomore
Kaitlin Thornton to lead the team in points. Thornton has scored 15 goals and leads the team in assists with seven. Sophomore
Rayna Deltuva leads the team in shooting percentage with .714 and 10 goals. Goalie
Kiley Keating leads the team in ground balls with 81 saves and a .458 save percentage in the net.
Sami Chenoweth leads the team, and the nation, in caused turnovers with 31 while
Olivia Conti has 23 on the year. Sulmonte and Thornton are neck-and-neck to lead the team in draw controls with 28 and 25 respectively. Four Tigers have scored 10 or more goals this season.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale enters the weekend 4-4 with an 0-3 Ivy League mark. The Bulldogs are coming off an 18-8 loss at Harvard. Rookie Jill Gollob leads the team with 25 goals and two assists for 27 points, while classmate Olivia Penoyer has scored 21. Penoyer leads the team in assists with 14 and has a team-high 35 points through eight games. Sophomore Sam Higgins leads the team in ground balls with 20 while also leading in caused turnovers with 16. Senior Izzy Nixon leads the nation and her squad in draw controls with 91 total, 11.38 per game. Sophomore Amelia Drake is Yale's starting goalie, she has played 290 minutes and holds a 36.9 save percentage with 31 saves.
Tigers in CAA Stats
Towson has two games to play before opening conference action next weekend at James Madison. Currently
Natalie Sulmonte is sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in goals per game with 2.38.
Kaitlin Thornton is eighth in the league in assists per game with .88.
Kiley Keating and
Olivia Conti are fourth and fifth respectively in ground balls per game with 2.63 and 2.50 on average. In caused turnovers per game,
Sami Chenoweth leads with Conti in second and
Meg Lynch sixth. Sulmonte and Thornton also team-up in draw controls per game, eighth and ninth in the conference respectively.
Towson in National Statistics
Since February 27,
Sami Chenoweth has led the nations in caused turnovers. The junior averages 3.88 caused turnovers per game.
Olivia Conti is fifth nationally with 2.88 per game. The duo lead the Tigers who are 12th in the nation in the statistic. Chenoweth's eight caused turnovers at Penn State in the season opener are tied for second-most by a player in the nation this season.
Kiley Keating is currently 19th nationally in saves per game with 10.13.
A Homecoming for Both Teams
Saturday is Towson's first home game since March 13th against Saint Joseph's and the Tigers will be home three of the next four games. For Yale, four members of the team are from Maryland, two from Baltimore, one from Towson and one from Sandy Spring. Isabelle Webster is a sophomore for the Bulldogs who graduated from McDonogh, along with freshman Rachel Anderson. Three of the four Yale players hailing from Maryland are freshmen and this will be the first game in their home state while playing college sports.
Promotional Updates
This week the Towson University women's lacrosse team updated its promotional schedule for the remaining five home games. Tomorrow's game will be Hometown Heroes with an autograph signing after the game. Next Tuesday will be Own Your Roar, Friday, April 12 will be One Love and Sunday, April 14 will be Youth Day. The regular season finale will be Senior Day on Sunday, April 21. Alumnae appreciation will also take place on Friday, April 12.
Tigers in the Community
In February, Towson University's athletic teams were celebrated as national champions after winning the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition. The competition was open to all Division I programs and the Tigers finished on top with a total of 5,583 community service hours completed from September to November 2018 in the Greater Baltimore Area.
