TOWSON, Md. – Saturday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team will host Drexel in the final game of the regular season.
The Tigers are tied with Delaware for third place in the conference while the Dragons have clinched the two seed for next week's conference tournament. Last Time Out
Towson is coming off two straight losses after falling to Delaware on Thursday night. The Tigers were led by seniors
Danielle Durjan and
Maia Lee, with 15 points from Durjan and 17 rebounds from Lee. After a close first quarter, the Blue Hens took a 10-point lead into halftime. The home team cut into the deficit in the third, eventually tying the game on a free throw made by
Ryan Holder at 37-37. In the final seconds of the period, Holder tied the game again before
Kionna Jeter made a free throw to take a one-point lead entering the fourth. The back-and-forth continued as the teams were tied with 8:48 to go, but the Blue Hens went on an 8-1 run in the final three minutes and sealed the win.
The Drexel Series (Dragons lead 56-20)
In the first conference game of the 2018-19 season, Towson took its first win over Drexel in 19 games. The Dragons have won 19 of the last 20 meetings and last season took a 62-54 win over the Tigers in Maryland. In Towson, Drexel leads the series 20-13. Saturday will be the 77th meeting between these two teams. Before the Tigers' win earlier this season they hadn't defeated the Dragons since 2010.
Last Time Against Drexel
On January 4, 2019 the Tigers sealed their first win over Drexel in eight years. Junior
Nukiya Mayo made a buzzer beater at the end of the game to seal the win 55-54. Towson was led by redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter with 21 points while Mayo contributed 13 and a team-high eight rebounds. The Tigers shot 40.7 percent from the field and saw 10 points off the bench in what was a close game throughout. The lead changed 18 times and Towson had to fight hard in the second half after scoring only two points in the second quarter.
Scouting the Tigers (17-11, 11-6 CAA)
Entering Saturday's game the Tigers are in the hunt to secure the three seed for the tournament next week. Towson second in the league in scoring with 69 points per game, led by
Kionna Jeter with 17.7 points per game.
Nukiya Mayo is the team's second leading scorer, averaging 14.5 points per game, and leads the team in rebounds with 7.6 a night.
Q. Murray leads the Tigers in assists with 4.4 per game. Towson is shooting 39 percent from the field and has an 8-3 record at home.
Scouting the Dragons (21-7, 13-4 CAA)
The Dragons come to town after falling to James Madison on Thursday night 58-47. Prior to Thursday's loss, Drexel was on a 12-game win streak on the road. One of only two teams in the CAA with 20 or more wins, the Dragons are not going to move from the two seed no matter the result of Saturday's game. Drexel is led by Bailey Greenberg, now the league's leading scorer, with 18.3 points per game. She is also the team's leading rebounder with seven boards a game while Aubree Brown leads the team in assists with 4.5 per game.
Tigers in National Statistics
Towson remains one of the top-five teams in the nation in blocked shots. The Tigers are second in blocked shots per game with 6.5, behind Baylor with 7.1. In total blocked shots Towson is third with 181 on the year. The Tigers remain sixth in the nation in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 17, and 17
th in the nation in rebounds per game with 42.3. Freshman
Janeen Camp is 54th nationally in blocked shots (50) and 51st in blocked shots per game (1.79).
Kionna Jeter is 69th in points per game (17.7), 36th in steals per game (2.61) and 34th in total steals (73).
A Turnaround Year
In her second year as head coach,
Diane Richardson has almost doubled the wins of the 2017-18 season. With a 17-11 record, the Tigers have the seventh best turnaround in the country. Towson went 3-1 against opponents from the Atlantic 10 Conference in the nonconference slate. The 2-0 start in conference action was the first time the Tigers have won two road conference games to start the year since 1996-97. Defeating Drexel in the conference opener was the first time since 2016 to start CAA play with a win and the first win over the Dragons since 2010. In the last six years the most wins in a season was 13 and only six teams have recorded 17 or more wins in Towson women's basketball history. The 11-6 mark in CAA play is the most conference wins since the 2007-08 season.
Tigers in Conference Stats
Jeter is second in CAA in scoring with 17.7 points per game, she leads in steals with 2.6 per game and is fifth in field goal percentage with 43.2. The guard is also ninth in minutes per game with 33.1. The Tigers are first in the CAA in offensive rebounds (16.8), first in blocked shots (6.46), second in steals (9.18), and second in rebounding offense (42.9). With her 1.8 blocked shots per game,
Janeen Camp is second in the league.
Nukiya Mayo lands in two top-10 lists, eighth in free throw percentage (74.6) and ninth in points (14.5). Point guard
Q. Murray is fourth in the CAA in assists per game with 4.4, she's also fifth in minutes (34.6) and sixth in free throw percentage (77.4).
Tigers in the Community
In February, the men's and women's basketball teams paired up in support of Autism Awareness and hosted a clinic with the Hussman Center. On Wednesday the teams hosted adults with autism in SECU Arena to work on footwork, shooting and passing, and play some games. CAA Championship Tickets on Sale
