Volleyball Adds UMBC Transfer Mitchell to Roster

TOWSON, Md. -- As the 2019 fall season inches ever closer, Towson University head women's volleyball coach Don Metil has added UMBC transfer Nikiya Mitchell to the roster for the fall campaign.

A middle blocker, Mitchell played in three matches for the crosstown Retrievers, logging time in six sets. She posted four kills on 11 attempts while dropping in three service aces. Mitchell had four total blocks, including a pair of solo stops during the 2017 campaign.

Prior to her time in Catonsville, Mitchell was a four-year varsity letter winner at Henry E. Lackey High School in Indian Head, Maryland. She was selected as the offensive MVP as a junior in 2015. The 5-foot, 10-inch middle earned All-Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) honors as a senior in 2016 and was a first-team pick in 2015. A speedster on the track, Mitchell was a state finalist in her sophomore and junior seasons in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

Mitchell played for three years on the club circuit and was named MVP at the PrepVolleyball.com Washington DC Unsigned Showcase as a member of the CEVA 18s Black squad.

During her time at Towson, Mitchell will work towards a degree in rhetorical writing and environmental science. Her career aspirations are to pursue a career in technical writing and research.

The Tigers open the 2019 season on Friday, Aug. 30 at Morgan State with a clash against Quinnipiac. First serve is set for 4 p.m. Towson rounds out the opening weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday, Aug. 31 against Seton Hall (2 p.m.) and host Morgan State (6 p.m.)
