TOWSON, Md. – The first FCS football preseason rankings of 2019 are out, and Towson University has a top-10 placement.
In the first two preseason rankings that have been released, Towson has been placed No. 10 in the HERO Sports FCS Preseason top-25 and No. 11 in the Athlon Sports' Preseason FCS Top 25.
This is the first time where Towson has earned preseason rankings since the 2014 season. Future preseason rankings will come from STATS FCS and the AFCA Coaches Polls.
The Tigers finished last year in the top-20 in FCS, spending eight weeks in the top-20, after finishing 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Towson earned victories over then top-15 teams Villanova, Elon and Stony Brook and earned a berth into the NCAA FCS Playoffs.
The Black & Gold return three All-Americans from 2018, including two on offense:
Tom Flacco, the reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Year, and
Shane Simpson, the 2018 CAA Special Teams Player of the Year, each return on an offense that led the CAA in scoring and total offense.
Aidan O'Neill will be going for the FCS field goals record on special teams.
Five future opponents are in the top-25 of at least one of these preseason rankings: James Madison, Maine, Elon, Delaware and The Citadel.
