SPARKS, Md. – Over the weekend, Towson University women's lacrosse head coach
Sonia LaMonica led her team, the Brave, to win the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL) championship over the Fight 13-12.
LaMonica captured the title in the league's second year of existence and her second year at the helm of the squad. The roster lists five Tiger alumnae, including
Tianna Wallpher and
Kelsea Donnelly, both of whom helped secure the win on Sunday at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Maryland.
Donnelly started the game and spent 39 minutes in the goal where she grabbed four saves on the way to victory. The goalie also grabbed three ground balls and recorded a caused turnover.
Wallpher, also a starter, assisted on the Brave's first goal of the fourth quarter, putting the squad within three of tying it up in a back-and-forth event. At halftime the Brave led by one, the score at 5-4, before the Fight scored three unanswered goals out of the half to take the lead.
Former Tiger
Kelly McQuilkin also saw action on the field in the championship game.
This season LaMonica had not only Donnelly, McQuilkin and Wallpher on the Brave, but also
Kaitlyn Montalbano and
Emily Gillingham.
The 2019 WPLL Title win comes after last season's loss in the championship game for LaMonica and crew to the Command, a 12-11 final. Entering Sunday's season finale, the Fight were undefeated and had defeated the Brave 15-12 in the beginning of the season.
