Musci Named to Men’s Lacrosse Staff

TOWSON, Md. -- With the 2019-20 academic year underway, Towson University head men's lacrosse coach Shawn Nadelen has announced Matt Musci as the program's newest addition. Musci will serve as an assistant coach/offensive coordinator.

"The Towson lacrosse family is excited to welcome in Matt Musci and his family," said Nadelen. "Matt is a proven leader that works very hard to establish strong relationships with his players in order to develop them into great young men and lacrosse players. His passion for the game of lacrosse is evident and his beliefs in what type of culture a program should have is completely in line with our culture at Towson. I am eager to get to work alongside Matt as we enter into the 2019-20 year."

Musci steps in for former associate head coach/offensive coordinator Anthony Gilardi, who accepted the head coaching position at Stony Brook University over the summer. Over the course of his career, Musci has mentored four players who have gone on to play in the professional ranks: Jarrod Neumann, James Barclays, Brendan Kearns and Tate Boyce.

"My family and I couldn't be more grateful and excited to join the Towson lacrosse family and athletics department," said Musci. "Personally, I am humbled by the opportunity afforded to me by Coach Nadelen, director of athletics Tim Leonard and deputy athletic director Tricia Brandenburg. I am eager for the challenges that lie ahead. It is a privilege to coach a program with such a strong lacrosse tradition and look forward to building relationships with all the young men on the team and mentoring them on and off the field. Also, I would like to thank Chris Gabrielli and Bob Driscoll for all the faith and guidance they provided me at Providence College. My experiences at Providence provided me with all the tools necessary to become the coach and person I am today."

Before arriving at Towson, Musci was an assistant coach/offensive coordinator at Providence College, beginning in July 2016. While in Providence, he helped the Friars develop and execute offensive game plans in settled, unsettled and man-up situations. He implemented individual skill development plans for the attackmen and midfielders. He was charged to recruit elite-level student-athletes while building relationships with high school and club coaches. While working with the Friars, Musci helped guide the team to 10 wins in the 2017 season, tied for the most single-season wins in program history. That year, Providence earned its first top 20 national ranking.  Over the course of his time in Rhode Island, Providence had several BIG EAST weekly honor winners, berths in the league tournament, All-BIG EAST selections and an All-BIG EAST Attackman.

Prior to Providence, Musci spent time at Lafayette College. He arrived in Easton, Pennsylvania as an assistant coach in August 2012 and was elevated to associate head coach/offensive coordinator in August 2015. He created and executed offensive skills and game plans, organized and directed the man-up offense and created individual offensive skill sessions. He also assisted in generating practice plans. While in Easton, he helped secure commitments from multiple high school All-Americans. While in Easton, Musci helped develop a two-time All-Patriot League Academic team goalie, an All-Patriot League defenseman, all while seeing 50 student-athletes earn Patriot League Academic Honor Roll plaudits.

From September 2008 to August 2012, Musci was the first assistant lacrosse coach/recruiting coordinator at Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Florida. He served as the defensive coordinator from 2008-11 before moving to the offensive side from 2011-12. While in Florida, Musci earned his Master of Business Administration, graduating in May 2011. During his time in Saint Leo, Musci helped lead the Lions to two Deep South Conference championships, one regular season title while coaching 23 All-Deep South selections. He also helped develop a Deep South Player of the Year, a Second-Team All-American and an Honorable Mention All-American. He was a Division II Assistant Coach of the Year finalist in 2010 as well.

Musci broke into the coaching game in September 2006 as an undergraduate assistant coach at Drexel University. Duties included running the substitution box and a focus on goalies and midfielders. During his days as a student-athlete at Drexel, he was a team captain as both a junior and senior, earned a spot on the CAA All-Academic Team and was selected to play in the prestigious USILA North-South All-Star game in 2006. During his time with the Dragons, Drexel earned a top 20 ranking and an 11-5 record during the 2007 campaign.

Musci graduated from Drexel in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.
