TOWSON, Md. – The second week of the season holds two road games for the Towson University field hockey team with a Friday tilt at Lehigh and Sunday action at Colgate.
The Tigers (0-1) face the two Patriot League teams after hosting Appalachian State last Friday in the season opener. Friday's game will have live stats available, while Sunday's contest will be streamed on Stadium with live stats as well. Last Time Out
Towson is coming off a 3-0 loss to Appalachian State in the season opener last week. The Tigers began 2019 at the TU Field Hockey Complex, marking the first season-opening game at the field which opened late last fall. Offensive efforts from Towson were apparent, with four penalty corners setting up opportunities for the home team to cut into the lead.
Kathryn Parkinson and
Georgia Beachley each got a shot on goal but the Mountaineers held a 2-0 lead entering the halftime and scored once again in the final few minutes of action.
Scouting the Mountain Hawks
Lehigh (1-0) enters the game with one win under its belt, a 1-0 victory over Rider last Friday. The Mountain Hawks were voted to finish fifth in the Patriot League this year in the preseason poll. After defeating Rider, Lehigh picked up two conference weekly awards for week one. Defender Lenke Havas was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week while freshman Maddie Kahn was named Goalkeeper of the Week.
The Lehigh Series
Friday will be the 18th meeting between Towson and Lehigh. Towson trails in the series 1-15-1. Last October the two teams met at the grand opening of the TU Field Hockey Complex and the Tigers' Senior Day celebration. Lehigh scored the first two goals of the game, holding a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute. Then-sophomore
Beira Ho recorded the first Towson goal at the new venue, cutting the lead to one before halftime. The Mountain Hawks struck once more at the 48 minute mark, extending the advantage. The Tigers saw one more goal in the final five minutes of the game but Lehigh went home with a 3-2 win.
Scouting the Raiders
Colgate (1-1) enters the weekend coming off a win as well. The Raiders took a 4-1 victory over Saint Louis on Saturday and will face Lock Haven on Friday before playing Towson. Voted to finish last in the Patriot League, Colgate started the season with a 4-1 loss at Central Michigan. The Raiders have seen five different players score in the first two games, while Taylor Casamassa recorded two assists over the weekend. Casamassa received Patriot League Preseason All-League honors and led the Raiders in shots last season.
The Colgate Series
A series history between Towson and Colgate is nonexistent, as Sunday is the first meeting between the two teams. The squads have similar opponents this season as the Tigers are set to play four Patriot League teams, including Colgate, with Lehigh, Bucknell and American also on the schedule. Towson will also face Rider later this season.
First Road Trip of 2019
The Tigers schedule includes 11 home games this season, but the team will travel for eight matchups. Towson has a neutral site game scheduled for Oct. 3 against Miami (OH), the teams will meet in Houston and play at a local high school. Aside from the neutral site trip, Colgate is the farthest the Tigers will travel for a game in the regular season, with 317.7 miles separating the two campuses. Towson's shortest distance for a game this year is 46 miles to College Park where the Tigers will play American University.
Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area. For the seventh consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked No. 1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
