Smith Named Preseason USILA All-American

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- With the 2020 NCAA Division I lacrosse season getting underway this weekend, Towson University junior defenseman Koby Smith was selected as a Second Tea USILA Preseason All-American.

The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) made its announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Smith was one of two players from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) to earn Preseason All-America honors from the USILA. Delaware netminder Matt Deluca was selected as a first teamer.

A native of Lutherville, Maryland, Smith was named CAA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after earning Second Team USILA All-America honors last spring. Smith, who transitioned from long stick midfield as a freshman to close defense as a sophomore, was the only sophomore to earn First Team All-CAA honors last spring while anchoring the Tiger defense to its record eighth CAA Championship. The Loyola Blakefield product started all 16 games as a sophomore while leading the Tigers with 20 caused turnovers. He logged six games in 2019 with multiple caused turnovers and was a force in transition as well, sticking opponents for 10 points on six goals and four assists. Off the turf, Smith collected 30 ground balls.

Towson concludes its scrimmage schedule this Saturday, Feb. 1 with a test against No. 1 Virginia at 11 a.m. at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. The Tigers' final exhibition will be Saturday at 3 p.m. against Hobart, also at Unitas ® Stadium.

The Tigers officially open the 2020 season down Charles Street on Saturday, Feb. 8 with a 1 p.m. showdown at No. 11 Johns Hopkins on ESPN3.
