ROCK HILL, S.C. – Two home runs helped the Towson University softball team defeat Holy Cross Friday night in the opening weekend of the Winthrop tournament.
In game one the Tigers rallied back but fell to Boston University 5-4 in their first game of the tournament.
Game two was highlighted by
Julia Smith-Harrington's first home run of the season as well as
Samantha Carson first collegiate one.
How it Happened-Game 1
- BU scored two runs early in the after Emily Gant hit a home run.
- The Tigers cut into the lead in the bottom of the third after a single by Jaclyn Mounie scored Brianna Ramirez. (BU 2-1)
- Another home run by Boston's Aliyah Huerta-Leipner put three more runs on the board for the Terriers.
- The Tigers cut back into the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Jessica Swistock had an RBI triple to left field. (BU 5-3)
- Towson had once more chance to cut into Boston's lead but only got one run on one hit in the bottom of the seventh ending the game 5-4.
How it Happened-Game 2
- Smith-Harrington homered in the first inning to put the Tigers on board.
- Towson added two more runs in the second inning on four hits.
- Carson hit her homer in the third to add to more runs for Towson.
- Madison Wilson led off the fourth with a double leading to a single by Nicole Kidwiler and another fantastic hit by Smith-Harrington helped Towson add two more runs and take the lead 7-0.
- Smith-Harrington closed the game striking out Holy Cross' Kari Jacobson.
Inside the Numbers
- Johnson threw five innings and had seven strikeouts in game one.
- Smith-Harrington threw a complete game with four strikeouts in game two.
- None of the Tigers were struck out in game two.
