Women's Lacrosse Travels to Saint Joseph's For Saturday Matchup

TOWSON, Md. The 2020 campaign continues for the Towson University women's lacrosse team this weekend with a road trip to Philadelphia. The Tigers face Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a tough season-opening loss at home to Penn State last Saturday, 12-9. Senior Shelby Stack paced Towson with three goals and an assist while rookie Blair Pearre tallied two scores. Freshman Carly Merlo saw her first start in the net with six saves. At halftime the Tigers trailed 9-6. Coming into the second half Kerri Thornton scored and cut the lead to two. It was scoreless for several minutes before Penn State extended its lead to 11-9 with 4:30 to go. The 12th goal sealed the win for the Nittany Lions.
 
The Saint Joseph's Series
Saturday will be the fourth meeting between these two teams. Towson leads the series 3-0. Last season the Tigers took a 17-9 victory at home in March, it was the first win of Towson's 2019 campaign. Three players recorded hat tricks against the Hawks, Kaitlin Thornton, Kerri Liucci and Rayna Deltuva all scored three goals apiece.
 
Scouting the Hawks
Saint Joseph's enters the weekend with an 0-2 record after falling to No. 15 Navy on Wednesday at home. The Hawks have faced two ranked opponents this year with No. 19 Georgetown in the season opener. Leading the offense is Sam McGee with five goals, six of her teammates have also scored. In the net SJU has played two goalies, Mikala Davis has started both games and has 13 saves with 61 shots faced through 112 minutes of action.
 
Scouting the Tigers
Stack leads the offense through one game with her three goals and assist. Blair Pearre and Kerri Thornton have each scored twice while Hannah Hobbes and Gabby Garrett scored once. Thornton continues to be a force with three draw controls leading the team, while Sami Chenoweth started the season with five caused turnovers and three ground balls.
 
Chenoweth Named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List
Announced on Thursday night, senior defender Sami Chenoweth has been selected to the first wave of the Tewaaraton Award watch list. This is her third major honor of the 2020 year after receiving preseason All-American accolades from Inside Lacrosse and was named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Team. In 2019 Chenoweth led the nation in caused turnovers, setting a school and conference record with 64 by the end of the year.
 
The Road Ahead
Tigers will be on the road for three of the next four games. Saturday Towson hits 95 North to Philadelphia and a game at Saint Joseph's and then a midweek game at Loyola (Md.) is on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Closing out February the Tigers host High Point on the 29th before traveling again for a Thursday game at Stony Brook on March 5.
