Towson Begins Spring In Florida

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's golf team is excited to begin its 2020 spring schedule. The Tigers will compete in the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The event is hosted by Loyola.

Competing in the two-day event for the Tigers will be Jackson Courtney, Derek Gold, Justin Griffith, Brad Riley and Jeremy Summerson.

This is the first of five tournaments this spring for the Tigers. They will compete twice in Connecticut and once in South Carolina before the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championships at the St. James Plantation on the weekend of April 24-26.

The Tigers enjoyed a strong fall campaign and are looking forward to building off of that momentum to enjoy a spring to remember.

"The guys are definitely excited to get down to Florida and tee it up in competition again," Towson head coach Mike Larkin said. "We've been lucky this winter to have avoided snow, for the most part, so early in the semester we've been able to be on the golf course a lot. That kind of has the guys itching to get back at it.

"There's also been a different feel as far as the commitment level this semester, which has been fun to watch develop. It will be great to get down there and see where all that work puts us to start the season."

The balanced Tigers had four different players lead or share team-best honors during each of their five fall tournaments. There were standout performances from veterans and impressive efforts from newcomers.

The Tigers finished in the top half of their final two fall events. They were eighth at the Elon Phoenix Invitational and fourth at the Towson Fall Invitational. The Tigers displayed plenty of poise and resilience in shaving 21 strokes off of their first round score to their final round score during the Healthplan Mountaineer Invitational hosted by West Virginia despite competing in rainy conditions.

Towson will return to action the weekend of March 27-29 when it competes in the Furman Intercollegiate Tournament at the Furman Golf Club. The Tigers will participate in the Sacred Heart Spring Invitational Tournament from April 5-6 and the one-day Yale Spring Invitational on April 18.

"Coming out of the break, these first tournaments of the spring semester are always what we use to evaluate what we need to work on heading towards CAA's," Larkin said. "This will be a week for the guys to compete as hard as they can over 54 holes, see what comes of it, and then come back to campus and take a look at the details to continue building on what we've been doing."
