From the Broadcast Booth: All-Time Men's Hoops Part II

In my last blog, I went through the first five of my all-time top 10 Towson University men's basketball players.  To reset: I broadcasted about half of the men's basketball games as an undergrad at Towson from 1979-83, and then basically every game since 1991.  My list comprises only those players that I have covered during those time periods.

In part one, and these are all in alphabetical order, the first five were: Scooter Alexander, Jerrelle Benimon, Ralph Biggs, Ralph Blalock and Devin Boyd.  On to the next and final five.

6. Brian Fobbs-  Only the fifth player in school history to score over 1,000 points in only two seasons as a Tiger.  Led the Tigers in scoring in each of his two years.  Was first team preseason All-CAA in his senior year.  One of the all-time best in knowing how to get the ball in the basket.  82 percent free throw shooter in his career.  Named All-CAA in both his seasons. A great teammate that was a joy to be around.  Only wish we could have had him for a couple more years.

7.  Lawrence Hamm -  Tremendous forward for the Tigers in the mid 2000s.  Started for four years.  In his senior season, almost averaged a double-double. Was named Towson Senior Male Athlete of the Year.  Get this: He led the team in rebounding all four of his seasons.  Tremendous competitor who was a shining star during a rough patch in Towson basketball.  Successful in his post-Towson career and helped to bring the CAA Men's Basketball Tournament to Washington, D.C.  His dad was one of the greatest Towson hoops fans of all-time.

8.  Terrance Jacobs - Another of those five who scored over 1,000 points playing just two years at Towson.  TJ played as hard as any player in the history of the program.  Never gave an inch.  At 6-feet, 3-inches, he led the East Coast Conference in rebounding his senior year.  Oh, he also led the ECC in scoring at 23.1 points per game. Was part of the Tigers 1990-91 NCAA Tournament team.  I just cannot explain to those who never saw him play, that he gave every ounce of energy he could get into every minute of every game.  Absolute pleasure to watch him play.

9.  Chuck Lightening -  Like Devin Boyd, a member of both of Towson's Division I NCAA Tournament teams.  Transferred from Maryland, and was named All-ECC as a junior and a senior.  Averaged just over 18 points his senior year.  One of the greatest leapers in school history.  Just a dynamic guy on and off the court.  We see him courtside at many games now, and he could probably still get out there and give it to the youngsters.  In the NCAA tourney against Oklahoma in 1990, he had one of the most spectacular dunks you will ever see anywhere.  Just so much fun to watch him play.

10.  Gary Neal - By a tenth of a point a game, second to Kurk Lee in scoring average per game at 25.6.  You will never see a smoother shot than Gary.  Transferred to Towson from LaSalle.  One of only three players to ever score over 1,000 points at two different schools.  All-CAA first team his senior year.  Broke 14 Towson records.  Left the Tigers and had a very successful NBA career.  There were nights where he was just unstoppable on the offensive end of the floor.  Back at Towson to earn his master's degree.  Was a grad assistant for the Tigers this season.  When he was on the team as a player, he was as quiet as any guy I had ever seen. As a grad manager this year, he really got on well with the team and has become quite gregarious over time.  Was a great addition for Coach Skerry.

So there you have it.  The 10 best players that I have seen over many of the last 42 years.

Next week, we will tackle my all-time Towson football team.

Stay safe everyone.
