TOWSON, Md. – For the first time since entering the Colonial Athletic Association 20 years ago, the Towson University tennis team is scheduled to play the other eight teams in the conference who compete in the sport. The Tigers are expecting to play 24 matches in six different states during the 2021 season.
"The girls practiced really hard all fall, learned a lot from last year and are ready to compete," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "We have many evenly matched opponents this year, so if we play up to our potential, it could be a great year."
Peterson is in his fourth year at the helm of the Towson women's tennis program. After serving as the team's interim head coach in 2016-17, he was officially named head coach prior to the 2017-18 season. Before last season was cut short due to the global coronavirus pandemic, Peterson led the Tigers to 7-0 shutouts over Coppin State and Delaware State and a 4-3 victory over Saint Francis.
Towson returns eight of the nine student-athletes from 2020 and has added three newcomers.
The Tigers are scheduled to open the season at Radford on February 12, the first of three trips to the state of Virginia. Towson also has scheduled matches in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina and Delaware during the season.
Ten of the first 13 matches are on the road, including CAA matches at James Madison (February 27), William & Mary (March 7), Elon (March 12) and College of Charleston (March 14).
The Tigers are scheduled to host 12 matches, included three at Coppermine Racquet & Fitness in nearby Pikesville. Home outdoor matches are played on the Towson Center Courts, located behind SECU Arena and the Towson Center.
Nine of the last 11 matches of the season will be at home, including seven straight from April 2-April 16. During that period, Towson will host CAA rivals Drexel (April 2) and UNCW (April 9). The Hofstra match on March 26, will be played at Coppermine.
After ending the regular season at Delaware on April 17, the Tigers will head to William & Mary for the CAA Women's Tennis Championship (April 22-25).
