TOWSON, Md. — The Towson University women's basketball team is set to finish out November against a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes, welcoming Howard on Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. and Delaware State on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out
Towson handily took care of Millersville Tuesday night, 95-46, to improve to 4-1 on the season. Five Tigers ended in double-digits led by Allie Kubek and Tarriyonna Gary with 14 points apiece, followed by Aleah Nelson, Rayne Tucker and Mariah Wilson with 12 points each. All 11 student-athletes that dressed scored at least two points in the affair.
Narrie Dodson set a new career-high with 11 rebounds to lead the team off the glass.
With 18 total steals, Towson scored 38 points off 28 turnovers. Also sticking to their roots, the Tigers continued their fast style of play, picking up 39 fast break points.
Coming Home
Five of 14 student-athletes on Towson's roster represent their home state of Maryland. Nelson is the lone Baltimore native while Kubek (Elkton), Evans (Columbia), Tucker (New Carrollton) and Rivera (Capitol Heights) are also from close by.
Also, through the Tigers' first five games, four of the five starters (Evans, Kubek, Nelson and Rivera) are from the home state of Maryland.
In The Rankings
Through five contests, Towson remains competitive in the national rankings. The team ranks 21st in rebounds with 234 total boards and 15th in rebounds per game, averaging 46.8 per night. The black & gold also pace the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in both categories.
Nelson also remains a prevalent force in the NCAA, as well. The point guard currently sits at ninth in the country with 33 total assists. She is 12th in helpers per game, averaging 6.6 per game.
Coaching Connections
Prior to becoming the Hornets head coach in June of 2021, E.C. Hill served as the assistant coach of the Tigers for two seasons. She primarily worked with the guards while in Tiger Town.
Friendly Foes
Although Towson has faced three opponents (Florida, Wofford and Millersville) for the first time in program history during the 2021-22 season, that will not be the case with Howard and Delaware State.
The Tigers are 2-6 all-time against the Bison. The two teams last met in the 1999-00 season when Towson dropped a 51-80 contest at home.
On the other hand, the Tigers own a 4-1 all-time record against the Hornets. The black & gold only lost the programs' first meeting in the 1985-86 season but have since gone on to win three in a row. Towson most recently met Delaware State in the 2011-12 campaign, coming out with the 70-59 victory.
Looking Into The Bison
Howard is on a two-game win streak, after gaining victories over Saint Peter's (62-52) and Mount St. Mary's (6-49). Prior to the wins they dropped three straight contests, all by at least 16 points.
Anzhane' Hutton leads her team averaging 10.5 points per game, and has reached double figure scoring twice this season. Brooklynn Fort-Davis paces her team off the boards, with 6.0 rebounds per game. Two Bison have registered 10 steals through five games (Krislyn Marsh and Gia Thorpe) while Destiney Howell has collected six blocks.
Investigating the Hornets
Delaware State is off to a rocky 0-4 start after dropping its most recent contest to Delaware, 48-79. Earlier in November, the Hornets suffered their worst loss of the season at the hands of Penn State, 120-51.
Sianny Sanchez-Oliver leads the Hornets averaging 9.8 points per game while adding 12 assists. Kiana Coomber and Breazia Robinson are each averaging 7.5 rebounds to lead the team off the boards.
Looking Ahead
After a three-game home stand to finish out November, the Tigers will hit the road for the first two weeks of December. The team will travel to East Carolina on Dec. 4 (12 p.m.) before heading up to UMass Lowell on Dec. 8 (3:00 p.m.). Prior to coming back to SECU Arena, Towson will take the short drive to American on Dec. 11 (2:00 p.m.).
Tigers in the Community
For the 7th consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked #1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. The Tigers won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
