Women’s Swimming Finishes Strong on Day One of Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- Day one of three is in the books for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Swimming Championship. The Towson University program brought home two medals on Monday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Katie Nunez swam well, bringing home a bronze medal in the 200-yard individual medley, touching in 2 minutes, 4.69 seconds. Nunez capped the evening with the anchor leg of Towson's 400-yard medley relay as Hailey Ritter, Kasey Gamache and Andrea Ducar joined her. Towson won the first of two timed finals heats with a 3:45.47.

Through nine events, Towson is third overall in the team standings with 153 points. William & Mary leads the team competition with 208 points, followed by James Madison in second with 166 points. Towson is nearly 40 points clear of Delaware's fourth-place total of 116.

How it Happened
  • Opening the day with the 500 yard freestyle, two Tigers, Meagan Clark and Karlee Carminati, earned berths in the evening's A Finals. The former touched in 4 minutes, 54.24 seconds while the latter went in 4:55.18. Clark had the fifth-fastest time while Carminati was just behind in sixth.
  • Suzannah Mills landed in the B Finals with a 4:59.60 with Lizzy Jones joining her after a 4:59.60.
  • All four 500 yard freestylers posted season bests in the preliminaries.
  • Two more Tigers earned a spot in the A Finals for the 200 yard individual medley. Katie Nunez finished fourth overall in the prelims with a 2:04.69, just ahead of Maddie Frick's fifth-place time of 2:05.30. Both Nunez and Frick won their preliminary round heats.
  • Samantha Casolo took 10th overall with a 2:07.07 for a spot in the B Finals, where she was joined by Kasey Gamache, who finished in 2:07.71. Victoria Dichak grabbed one of two alternate spots for the event with a 2:08.88.
  • Hailey Ritter was the lone Tiger in the 50 yard freestyle A Finals after her time of 23.29 landed her fourth overall. She dropped nearly a full second off her previous season best time (24.23).
  • Maddie Mince and Parker Schulz earned B Finals spots with a 23.65 and 24.51, respectively.
  • Clark finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle A finals, with a time of 4:56.31.
  • In the 200-yard IM, Nunez dropped more than a second from her preliminary time, posting a third-place finish in 2:03.54. Frick added a sixth-place finish with a 2:05.14.
  • The final individual event of the second session, the 50 yard freestyle, saw Ritter take fourth in 23.22, just a quarter second off a podium spot.
  • Trailing at the midway point of the first 400-yard medley relay, Ducar pushed the pace on the butterfly leg, allowing Nunez to come up clutch for the third-place finish. Towson's A relay dropped 10 seconds from its seed time in the event.
Head Coach Jake Shrum
  • Our team had an outstanding day of racing. Katie Nunez showed a tremendous amount of perseverance after a tough 200 free relay split to place third in the 200 IM and then power home our 400 medley relay to a third-place finish.
  • Hailey Ritter had three great swims in finals tonight and we also had top eight finishes from Meagan Clark, Karlee Carminati and Maddie Frick.
Up Next for Towson
  • Action resumes Tuesday afternoon at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center at 12:10 p.m. for individual preliminary swims.
  • On tap for Tuesday will be the 400 yard IM, the 100 yard butterfly, the 200 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke, the 100 yard backstroke, the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 yard freestyle relay.
