Women’s Swimming Takes Third at 2021 CAA Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- For a sixth-straight year, the Towson University women's swimming and diving team landed on the podium for the team standings, taking a third-place finish at the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.

Towson amassed 605 points at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center over a three-day meet, fending off a push from the University of Delaware (578). James Madison won the team event with 829 points. William & Mary finished second with 663.

JMU's Madison Cottrell was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer while JMU head coach Dane Pedersen and William & Mary head coach Nate Kellogg were the Co-Coaches of the Year.

Towson's Katie Nunez picked up a silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle with a 50.42 A Finals time. Samantha Casolo brought home bronze in the 200-yard butterfly Wednesday evening, finishing with a time of 2 minutes 00.98 seconds.

How it Happened
  • In the day's first event, Suzannah Mills, who medaled yesterday in the 400 IM, earned a spot in the A Finals of the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.76. Elise Devlin finished with the ninth-best time in the prelims, missing the A Finals by sixth-hundredths of a second (2:01.78). Maddie Frick earned a B Final time as well with a 2:05.22.
  • Nunez picked up an A Finals berth in 100-yard freestyle, going for a 50.51 in the preliminary swims. Parker Schulz put in a B Finals time of 51.90 while Maddie Mince turned in a 51.47 for the second-best B Final time.
  • All three Towson swimmers in the 200 yard breaststroke qualified for the A Finals, paced by a 2:18.62 from Kasey Gamache. Andie Weitzman finished the preliminary swim in 2:19.61, followed by a 2:20.43 from Tiffany Matulis.
  • Towson put another three swimmers into the A Finals of the 200-yard butterfly. Casolo had the best Tiger time with a 2:00.98, followed by Andrea Ducar in 2:03.55 and Carminati in 2:03.61.
  • After a 40 minute break between events, Carminati got back in the pool for the 1,650 yard freestyle, the first of two timed finals for the event. The Tiger set the bar for the evening's race and won her heat with a time of 16:55.24. Carminati pulled nearly a full minute off her season-best time.
  • The evening session kicked off with the second heat of the 1,650 yard freestyle. Combined with Carminati's time, the Tigers finished fourth and fifth in the event as Meagan Clark took fourth overall with a 16:54.94.
  • Mills took fifth in the 200-yard backstroke finals, and was less than a second from a podium finish. 
  • Nunez then added her silver medal to the Tigers' pile with her 50.42 swim in the 100-yard freestyle, and was just five-hundredths of a second from a gold medal.
  • A deep Tiger squad in the 200-yard breaststroke added big points as Gamache finished fifth (2:18.80), followed by Matulis in seventh (2:20.48) and Weitzman in eighth (2:21.20).
  • Another trio of Towson swimmers landed in the A Finals for the 200-yard butterfly, led by a fourth-place finish from Samantha Casolo (2:01.82), two seconds ahead of Ducar (2:03.85) in fifth. Carminati notched a seventh-place finish with a time of 2:05.05.
  • The finale event of the 2020-21 campaign saw the Tigers take fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Ritter, Mince, Nunez and Schulz teamed up for a time of 3:23.94, winning heat one of the relays. JMU, William & Mary and Delaware all swam in the second heat, with the Blue Hens clipping Towson for a third-place finish in 3:23.02.
