Towson Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Drexel

TOWSON, Md. – Themis Haliou stayed unbeaten in April, but the Towson University tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 to Drexel Thursday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Complex.

The Tigers No. 1 team of Haliou and Alexa Martinez won for the eighth time in the 10 matches, but Drexel won the other two matches by scores of 6-4. It point proved pivotal as the teams split the six singles matches.

Haliou moved to 5-0 at No. 2 with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory. In those victories, the junior has won 60-of-67 games. After playing at No. 1 for the first 12 matches of the season, head coach Jamie Peterson flipped Haliou and Martinez at the top of the lineup.

"Part of the reason why she was struggling at No. 1 was her confidence," Peterson said. "When any player loses confidence, especially somebody like Themis who thrives on it, you struggle and she was struggling. The idea to move her to No. 2 was to get her confidence back up. It is back."

Sarah Pospischill battled back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. The sophomore leads the team with 10 singles victories.

Lauryn Jacobs rallied from down a set to take the match in the No. 6 position. The senior used her powerful serve to earn a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory.

"We knew this match could come down to the doubles point and it did," added Peterson. "I was proud of how the girls competed but Drexel was just a little bit better than us today. There is a fine line between winning and losing. I can be upset that we lost, but I can't be upset with how the girls competed."
