Towson Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University tennis ended the 2021 regular season with a 6-1 loss to undefeated Delaware at the Delaware Field House Courts on Saturday afternoon.

Jessica Assenmacher had the lone victory, a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Tayo Adetunji. The two are from Johannesburg, South Africa and played often as juniors.

"Jess knew her game well and this was the best match she has played all year," said head coach Jamie Peterson. "She was consistent and able to win the big points. She did everything well today."

Delaware earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches by identical 6-2 scores. The Blue Hens then won five singles matches in straight sets, although Themis Haliou (No. 1) took the second set to a tiebreaker, while both Amelia Lawson (No. 3) and Sarah Pospischill (No. 4) lost by 6-4 scores in the second.

"Delaware is a strong team and I thought we were a little bit overwhelmed in the beginning. It was senior day," Peterson added. "Not that we played poorly in doubles, they were just better. We had a slow start in the singles, but I was encouraged that Themis, Sarah and Amelia played better in the second set. We were hoping to carry some momentum into third sets. It just didn't happen today."
