HELLERTOWN, Pa. –
Jackson Courtney carded a 1-under round of 71 during the second round of the Abarta Collegiate Invitational at the Steel Club on Monday.
The senior made six birdies on the round, including four on his back nine. The Towson team started on the 17
th hole each day. Courtney rolled in birdies at No. 8, 9, 14 and 15. He finished in a 10
th place tie after 36 holes, at 2-over par, after an opening round 75.
"The hole locations were a little more challenging today with firm and fast greens, so that was a really solid round," said Towson head coach
Mike Larkin. "Jackson got the putter going today and that is usually the case with him, if the putter gets going, he will likely play well. Any time you shoot under par on a golf course like that, it is pretty solid."
Courtney, who was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Golfer of the Week after finishing sixth in the Carpetbagger Classic (March 20-21), ranks second on the team in scoring average (75.6). Nine of his 12 rounds have been 76 or better.
Brad Riley, who shot a 71 during Sunday's opening round, was Towson's second best finisher at the tournament. The sophomore finished +5 after a 78 on Monday.
Justin Griffith, who leads the Tigers in scoring average this season at 75.0, shot his average on Monday. He finished the tournament at +7, one stroke better than
Jeremy Summerson.
Julian Gonzalez was Towson's fifth player at the Abarta. He finished three strokes behind Summerson.
Senior
Derek Gold, playing as an individual, shot a season-low 74.
"Coming down the stretch, Derek was fantastic. I said to him afterwards that I appreciated the ball striking display," added Larkin. "If he would have gotten a couple putts to fall, it could have been a great round. He gave himself some great looks. He had about 12-feet for eagle on 15, which was our second to last hole. He just missed and made birdie. A hole earlier, he had a birdie putt from inside 10-feet. It did not go in, but he was hitting some good golf shots. It was fun to watch."
Towson University finished the tournament in sixth place.
