Towson Women's Basketball Hosts Longwood in Season Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team will start their season against defending Big South Champion the Logwood Lancers on Saturday, Nov. 12th at 7 p.m. at SECU Arena.

New Faces
Towson added six newcomers this season for the 2022-23 season. Four players played college basketball last year with two incoming freshmen. Taiye Johnson comes to Towson after three years at Radford, while Alexia Nelson comes after two years at UMBC. Alina Sendar comes in after one year at Georgia and Patricia Anumbga comes from CCBC Essex. India Johnston and Gabby Scott will make their collegiate debuts this season.
 
Preseason Honors
Anissa Rivera was picked to Preseason All-CAA First Team after being named All-CAA Preseason Honorable Mention last year. Rivera led the Tigers last season in rebounding, averaging 7.1 boards a game, including a season-best 14 against Frostburg State.
 
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was named to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team. Kornegay-Lucas was the 2021-22 CAA Sixth Player of the Year after averaging 8.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game off the bench. The Camden, Del. native led the Tigers in steals with 40 and finished second in assists with 71.
 
At the Helm
Coach Laura Harper was announced as the Head Coach of Towson's women's basketball program in April. This will be her first season in charge of the Tigers. Harper previously coached Coppin State for the last two years and finished last season with a 15-13 record. She inherits a squad that went 24-8 and made a WNIT appearance last year. 
 
SECU Fortress
The Tigers hold a 70-53 (.569) home record since SECU Arena was built, including a 30-14 (.681) record against non-conference opponents. This will be the first time that a Big South opponent will be playing at SECU Arena.
 
On the Ballot  
Towson received 28 votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll. The Tigers are one of five CAA teams to get votes in the poll, with Drexel being ranked the highest with 481 votes to earn the seventh spot.  The Tigers were ranked as high as 15th last year in the poll.
 
Preseason Poll
The CAA announced its annual Preseason Poll last month. The Tigers were picked to finish in fifth place, but received two first-place votes, the second most of any CAA team. Drexel was picked to finish first, receiving 10 votes.
 
Tigers In The Postseason
Towson has reached the postseason three times in the past 15 years. The team made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. They also advanced to the WBI in 2010. Towson earned their second trip to the Postseason WNIT after a 24-8 season last year.
 
Scouting The Lancers
Longwood hits the road for the first time this season after splitting their first two home games. The Lancers opened their season with an 82-62 loss to CAA rival Delaware. Last night, Longwood's Janay Turner hit the winning bucket with six seconds remaining to win 66-65 over the Ohio Bobcats. The Lacers were picked to finish in sixth place in the Big South Preseason Poll with Anne-Hamilton LeRoy earning Big South Preseason All-Conference Second Team Honors. 
 
Last Time Out  
Towson fell to Old Dominion in the First Round of the WNIT.  The Tigers lost 72-66 to the Monarchs behind Iggy Allen's 25 points. Aleah Nelson led Towson with 23 points, five rebounds and six assists, while Allie Kubek registered a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds.
 
Next Up
The Tigers will head on the road for the upcoming two games with the next game against Saint Francis U in Loretto, Pa.
