Freyberger Leads Towson at Day One of Southern Invitational

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – After two rounds at the Southern Invitational, Towson University men's golfer Brad Freyberger leads the Tigers, sitting at two-under par after 36 holes of golf at The Falls Club.

Freyberger shot 69-73-142 through the first two rounds, going -3 in the opening round. Through 36 holes, the Ashburn, Virginian is tied for ninth in the field of 60. 

As a team, Towson is ninth, combining for a 302-296-597 day on the Par 72, 6,757 yard course. Ohio State leads the field at 559 (282-277) while FAU (281-287-568) and James Madison (292-279-571) round out the top three teams.

How it Happened
  • Freyberger finished the first round with a three-under 69, aided by three birdies on the front nine. The rookie went bogey-free on the back nine of the opening round, adding two birdies to his card on the Par 4 14th and the Par 5 18th.
  • In the second round, Freyberger carded three bogies on the front but had two birdies to counter. The freshman scored two bogies and two birdies on the back nine to finish the round +1 with a 73.
  • Jeremy Summerson bounced back from a slow start, going nine over par on the first round with an 81. The junior responded in the second round to go -1 with a 71 thanks to three birdies on the back nine with just one bogie.
  • Julian Gonzalez was consistent on the day, going 76-77-153 as Towson's third scorer. After going four over on the front nine of the second round, Gonzalez bounced back with a +1 second half with two birdies to balance a double-bogey on 18.
  • Like Summerson, freshman Phil Minnehan had a better second round, scoring 82-74-156 on the day. Minnehan finished the back nine -1 in the second round, going birdie on each of the two Par 3s, with the second coming on his final hole of the afternoon.
Behind the Numbers
  • Freyberger flexed on the long ball, scoring an average of 4.13 on the Par 5s, scoring a -7 on the longest holes. He was tied for the best Par 5 scoring average in the opening two rounds with Ohio State's JonErik Alford, who is tied for fourth at the event.
  • Freyberger logged nine birdies on the day, tying for the sixth-most birdies in the field.
  • As a team, Towson had the sixth-best scoring average on Par 3s, posting a 3.20 on average. Likewise, the Tigers were in the middle of the field in Par 5 scoring average with a 4.83 score. 
  • The Tigers tied for the sixth-most birdies on day one, scoring 30 to pull even with Belmont.
  • Summerson and Freyberger were both an even 3.00 average on the Par 3s through the first two rounds of the Southern Invitational.
