Men’s Golf Ties for Third at Carpetbagger

URBANA, Md. – The Towson University men's golf team put together its best showing of the spring, tying for third place in a 14 team field at the 2022 Carpetbagger Classic, hosted at Worthington Manor Golf Club Saturday and Sunday.

Towson improved its score by four strokes across Sunday's 18 holes, finishing with a combined 298. The Tigers fired a 302 in 18 holes on Saturday, landing in sixth after day one, finishing with an even 600 across 36 holes.

Rhode Island won the event (291-292–583), followed by Robert Morris (294-302–595). Towson tied for third with Bryant (296-304–600) and co-host Colgate (303-307–600). The Tigers were one of two teams to go sub-300 in Sunday's cool and blustery round. Rhode Island fired a 292 on Sunday as well.

How it Happened
  • Freshman Brad Freyberger remained as the Tigers top competitor, finishing fifth overall at two over par on the Par 72 course. After going for a 72 yesterday, Freyberger capped the weekend with a 74 (72-74–146) for the event. 
  • Bouncing back from a six-over par day on Saturday, Jeremy Summerson went one-over on Sunday with a 73, tying for 16th place overall (78-73–151). Summerson pounded the ball off the tie on the 13th hole, finishing with an eagle on the Par 5 hole. 
  • Justin Griffith had a consistent weekend, going three-over on Sunday and finishing tied for 21st (77-75–152). Griffith also carded an eagle on the Par 5 ninth hole.
  • Julian Gonzalez matched Griffith in a tie for 21st, flipping scores and going 75-77–151.
  • Freshman Phil Minnehan jumped eight spots on Sunday, going four over in the final round to finish tied for 29th (78-76–154).
  • Vinny Fanucchi was Towson's top individual player, finishing tied for 42nd after going 79-78–157. Brad Riley's return to the course was level through the weekend after going 79-80–159 for the weekend. Branden Nguyen carded an 80-80–163 weekend.
Up Next for Towson
  • After playing twice this week, the Tigers are off until Monday, March 28 and Tuesday, March 29.
  • The Tigers head to the tidewater area for the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary.
  • First and second rounds are set for Monday at Golden Horseshoe - Gold Course, followed by round three on Tuesday.
