WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After sitting in a tie for third place after 18 holes of the 2022 Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate, the Towson University men's golf team put together its second win of the academic year, taking the team title at the event hosted by William & Mary.
Towson finished with a team score of 882 (294-300-288–882) to win the event by seven strokes over Georgetown (287-301-301–889), which was in first place entering the final round. Old Dominion (302-308-289–899) finished third overall.
The Tigers were one of three teams with a third-round score below 300, leading the action on Tuesday with a 288. Old Dominion registered a 289 on the final round while one of Penn's squads recorded a combined 293.
Freshman Phil Minnehan finished tied for fourth overall, carding a one-over 72 in the final round on the 6,817 yard course.
How it Happened
- After resuming suspended play from round two due to darkness, the Tigers were in second place overall after 36 holes.
- Minnehan was 13th overall after two rounds, while Justin Griffith was third overall with a 71-73–144 after two rounds.
- Minnehan bounced back on the final day with a one-over 72. After logging three bogies on his front nine, leading off from the 10th tee, Minnehan went one-under on the front nine with three birdies and a bogey. Minnehan capitalized on the Par 5s, scoring two of his birdies on the Par second and sixth holes.
- Griffith carded an 80 in the third round to finish tied for 11th overall, going 71-73-80–224.
- Overcoming a slow start on Monday, freshman Brad Freyberger secured a tie for 15th overall with a one-over 72 on the final 18 holes. The Ashburn, Virginian posted two birdies in his final five holes, alongside two pars and a bogey to finish one over.
- Likewise, Brad Riley was Towson's top performer on the final day, going one-under with a 71 to finish tied for 20th (74-83-70–227). The Par 5 second was likely Riley's favorite hole on the Gold Course as he posted back-to-back eagles on the 498-yard hole in rounds two and three.
- Jeremy Summerson finished tied for 39th, responding with a three-over 74 in the final round (84-75-74–233).
- Branden Nguyen played as an individual, finishing 74th overall (81-87-80–248).
Behind the Numbers
- Towson had the best team score on the Par 3 holes, averaging 3.17. The Tigers had the fourth-best average on Par 4 holes with a 4.33.
- The Tigers had the second-most combined birdies, logging 41 across the 54 hole event. Only Old Dominion finished with more, carding 45. Towson had the third-most eagles at the event with three, two of which came from Riley. Georgetown had six while Longwood finished with five.
- Minnehan had the best Par 4 average at the event, going just over par with a 4.06 average. Riley was the second-best player on the Par 5 with a 4.44 average and going for a combined -2 on the Par 5s. He tied for the second-most eagles at the event with his pair.
- This is the second event the Tigers have won this academic year, coupled with the team title at the Towson Fall Invitational in October to round out the fall season.
- This marks the first time the Tigers have won two events in the same academic year since the 2015 campaign when Towson won the Rutgers Invitational and the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate in Fall 2015.

- After playing four events in the month of March, the Tigers are idle until mid-April.
