Men’s Golf Finishes Tied for Tenth at Ross Collegiate

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Opening the 2022 spring schedule the Towson University men's golf team finished tied for 10th at the Ross Collegiate Classic on Tuesday, finishing up the second round and playing the entire third round on day two.

Towson finished +9 in the third round, scoring a 297 on the day. The Tigers combined to fire a 901 (299-305-297), tying with Princeton for 10th place.

Seton Hall won the event, hosted at the Par 72, 6,633 yard Mid Pines Golf Club, scoring an 873. Elon was second with an 877 while Richmond took third at 882. Loyola University Maryland finished fourth at 884 while Connecticut rounded out the top five with an 886.

How it Happened
  • Justin Griffith led the Tigers with a 221 (74-75-72), including an even 72 in the final round. Griffith had two birdies on the front nine and one on the back, coupled with two bogies on the back and one on the eighth hole for his even score in the third round. 
  • The senior finished tied for 19th at the event, which was hosted by George Mason University.
  • Brad Freyberger was second for the Tigers and tied for 31st, carding a 225 (73-77-75) and bouncing back after a +5 second round.
  • Julian Gonzalez was third for the Tigers and tied for 49th. In the third round, Gonzalez knocked down a birdie on the Par 5 15th, covering the longest hole on the course in just three strokes.
  • Freshman Phil Minnehan was Towson's final scorer with a 231 (74-82-75) and tying for 62nd. Minnehan went -1 on the front nine of the third round, but struggled on the back with five holes over par, but balanced with two birdies on 12 and 18.
  • Jeremy Summerson finished tied for 76th with a 234 (80-79-75), scoring his best on the third round with a +3 75, aided by two birdies on the front nine and another one on the back.
  • Vinny Fanucchi finished 104th in the field as an individual, scoring a 258 (83-84-84).
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson had the fifth-best scoring average on the par 4s, going 4.24 on average.
  • The Tigers were tied for second in the 17-team field with three eagles across the three rounds. Only St. John's had more eagles with four. Griffith, Gonzalez and Freyberger all scored eagles this week.
  • Griffith had the team's best scoring average on the Par 4s, scoring a 4.07 on average and going +2 on the medium-length holes, which ranked 12th at the event.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers head to Florida next week for the Southern Invitational.
  • Action is slated for Monday and Tuesday, March 14 and 15 at The Falls Club of the Palm Beaches.
  • The event will be hosted by Loyola University Maryland in Lake Worth, Florida.
