TOWSON, Md. – Two Towson University men's golf student-athletes have been selected to participate in the 2022 PGA Works Collegiate Championship.
Senior Julian Gonzalez and sophomore Branden Nguyen were selected to this year's event, hosted at Union League Liberty Hill and The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale, both in the Greater Philadelphia area. Each player will get a practice round at both courses.
This year's field of 206 players includes 10 men's Division I teams and 56 individuals.
The 54 hole event kicks off on Monday May 2 with the men's Division I field and all individuals starting at Liberty Hill. On Tuesday May 3, the men will play at Torresdale before returning to Liberty Hill on Wednesday May 4 for the final round.
Per PGA Works: The Team Division is open to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with NCAA Division I and Division II golf programs. Priority is given to all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) including but not limited to schools in the MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, and SIAC Conferences.
The Individual Division is open to ALL eligible student-athletes on the current roster of their collegiate golf team (DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA) that do not have a represented team at the Championship, or students participating in the Professional Golf Management (PGM) programs. Participants competing in the Individual Division MUST be one of the following ethnic origins: African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, Latinx, Middle Eastern, Native Hawaiian, North African, and Other Pacific Islander.
This academic year, Gonzalez has played in 24 rounds across nine tournaments. His scores have counted into the team score seven times as he averages 75.96 per round. One of his best outings this year, Gonzalez finished tied for fourth at the Howard Bison Invitational, shooting a 228 across three rounds, including 74 and 73 in the first and third rounds, respectively.
Nguyen has played eight rounds for the Black & Gold this year, competing in three tournaments as an individual. He tied for 17th overall at the Towson Invitational, hosted at Prospect Bay Country Club in late October, scoring 75-75-72–222. Most recently, Nguyen scored a 163 in two rounds of action at the CarpetBagger Classic in nearby Urbana, Maryland.
