BEAUFORT, S.C. – Behind a pair of top 20 finishes from junior Brad Riley and freshman Brad Freyberger, the Towson University men's golf team finished sixth overall at the 2022 CAA Men's Golf Championships.

College of Charleston won the team event, finishing with a combined 837 (281-274-282). UNCW was second in the team standings with an 856 (283-281-292). Drexel finished third overall, scoring a two-under 862 (290-283-289) as a team.

The Tigers were steady in the team scoring throughout the three-round event at the Cotton Dike Course at Dataw Island Club. Towson scored a 295 on both Sunday and Monday before logging a 296 in the final round on Tuesday.

Brad Riley tied for 17th in the 45-player field, finishing with a 219 (74-73-72), improving each round on the 6,787-yard course. Freyberger was tied for 20th in his first-ever CAA Championship appearance, finishing with a 221 (74-71-76).

How it Happened
  • Riley was Towson's best scorer with his 219, scoring an even-par 72 in the third and final round. The junior posted two birdies in the first three holes and logged just two bogies on the day, once on the Par 4 fourth hole and the Par 4 14th.
  • Riley finished the third round with 14 pars and was -1 on the front nine. He tied off on the 10th for the third round, going one over for his first nine holes.
  • Teeing off on the 10th as well, Freyberger finished his first nine holes five over par, but bounced back on the course's front nine, going one under with a birdie on the Par 3 fifth hole with eight pars.
  • Jeremy Summerson rebounded throughout the event to score an even-par 72 on the final day. The junior finished with a 224 total (77-75-72) to finish 31st. Leading off from the 10th hole, Summerson posted two birdies in his first four holes, but had three bogies before making his turn. On the first nine holes of Cotton Dike, Summerson edged up to three over on the day through 13 holes, but posted three birdies in the final four holes to finish even par on the round.
  • Another freshman in Phil Minnehan logged a 227 in his first postseason appearance, finishing tied for 33rd overall. Minnehan teed off on the 10th hole as well, carding an even score through his first nine holes with two birdies and two bogies. The freshman had six pars on holes one through nine, but had a double on the first hole and bogies on three and eight.
  • Justin Griffith finished 38th in the field with a 233 (76-76-81). Griffith's third round was highlighted by an eagle on the 493-yard, Par 5 third hole.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson tied for the third-best scoring average on the course's Par 5 holes, averaging a 4.77 and going -14 across all three rounds. The Tigers were one of three teams with multiple eagles at the event, carding a pair.
  • The Tigers had the third-most par scores in the three days, jotting down 161. Champion Charleston had the most with 168 while UNCW notched 165.
  • Freyberger had the third-best scoring average on the Par 3s, needing just 2.92 strokes per hole and finishing one-under on the short holes for the event.
  • Griffith and Freyberger were two of the eight players to log at least one eagle. Freyberger managed the feat in the second round while Griffith did so on the final day.
  • Riley finished with the second-most par scores at the event, logging 39 in total, trailing only Charleston's Zach Reuland (44). Freyberger was close behind with 36 pars to his credit.
Quotables - Head Coach Mike Larkin
Looking to par, we've gotten better pretty much every year (in Larkin's five-year tenure). Seven-over, seven-over, eight-over, for 22 over total this year, we were pretty consistent.

I thought today played a little tougher with the wind and some more difficult hole locations, I think the guys did a pretty good job today. I know a couple of them will come away disappointed.

It was nice to see an even-par round from Brad (Riley) and Jeremy (Summerson). We're making strides in the right direction. I know the guys are now itching, and realize we're close to breaking through to another level. We'll be reevaluating what we can do this summer to take it to that next level.
