TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's golf team will play its fourth tournament of the 2022 spring campaign this weekend at the Hoya Invitational in Rockville, Maryland. The two-day event, hosted by Georgetown, will be played on the North Course at Woodmont Country Club on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10.

Woodmont Country Club was home to the prestigious 120^th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in 2020 and has been a site for the US Open and US Women's Open sectional qualifiers.

It is the third consecutive tournament that third-year head coach Shannon Briggs has scheduled an event at a top venue, following the Red Rocks Invitational in majestic Sedona, Arizona and the Babs Steffens Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida, a venue that hosts the final stage of the LPGA Tour Qualifying School. 

"Sidelined from a spring season my initial year coaching at Towson (2020) and a short-handed fall of last year, I really wanted to plan a tournament schedule that would be memorable and impactful for this group," Briggs said.

For the third straight event Jordan Cornelius, Julia Calomiris, Odette Font Garcia, Faith McIlvain and Rayab Lee will play for Towson. The five established a new team score with a 2-under par 286 at the Red Rocks Invitational on March 19. During the second round, Font Garcia broke the program record with a 5-under par 67.

Emma Cox will compete as an individual.

The Hoya Invitational features 13 teams – Towson, Georgetown, Boston University, Columbia, Harvard, Howard, Princeton, Quinnipiac, Seton Hall, Stetson, St. John's, Penn and Yale. A total of 69 players will compete, including individuals.

Saturday, which will consist of the first and second rounds will begin at 8:45 a.m. on the 6,125 -yard par 72 course. The Tigers are playing with Harvard and Quinnipiac. Sunday's third round will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Towson's final tournament of the season is the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship next weekend at St. James Reserve Course in Southport, North Carolina. The 54-hole tournament begins Friday, April 15 and concludes Sunday, April 17.

DYNAMIC DUO
Calomiris and Cornelius arrived on campus together in September 2018 and over the last four years been fixtures in the lineup. They shared the program record, along with Alix Lowe, for lowest single round until Font Garcia broke it March 19.

Calomiris has made the travel roster for all 27 tournaments during her career. Heading into this tournament, she is averaging 77.4 strokes, which includes a career best 68 at the Pirate Invitational on September 21, 2021. She finished 15^th at last spring's Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament.
 
Cornelius, who has played in 24 of 27 events, was the first Towson women's golfer to earn All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honors after finishing in a third place tie at the 2019 CAA Championship. A month earlier, she shot a 68 during the third round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic (March 23, 2019) in Hawaii. Her career scoring average is 77.1.  

In the 24 tournaments together, one of the two has been the top Towson finisher 17 times: Cornelius-11, Calomiris-6.

THE TRIPLETS
Calomiris, Cornelius and Font Garcia have played in all eight events this season. After 24 rounds, the three are separated by eight shots with Calomiris taking one fewer stroke than Cornelius (1,848 to 1,849) with Font Garcia at 1,856. One of the three has been Towson's medalist in seven of the eight tournaments.

CAA GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Coming off a record setting performance at the Red Rocks Invitational (March 19-20), Font Garcia was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Golfer of the Week on March 23.

The freshman from Spain shot a 5-under 67 during the second round of the Red Rocks Invitational at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona, Arizona to break to school record of 68 (-4) held by three players: former Tiger standout Alix Lowe (10-10-17) and current seniors Cornelius (3-23-19) and Calomiris (9-21-21). Font Garcia made five birdies and 13 pars during the round.

RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN
On September 21, 2021, the Tigers broke the school record for lowest team round by shooting a 2-over par 290 during the final round of the Pirate Collegiate Classic in Greenville, N.C. The record lasted less than four tournaments.

On March 19, 2022, during the second round of the Red Rocks Invitational, Font Garcia's record round of 67 helped Towson break the team scoring record for a round as the top four performers shot a combined 2-under par 286. Font Garcia (-5), McIlvain (-1), Cornelius (E) and Calomiris (+4) were the four scores used. The 286 was the best of the 19 teams during the second round of the tournament and vaulted Towson into sixth place after 36 holes.

STUDENT-ATHLETES
The Towson women's golf team has the fourth highest Grade Point Average (GPA) among the 19 Athletics teams with a 3.523 cumulative GPA after the fall 2021 semester. Cox, who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall, has a 3.931 overall GPA, while Calomiris, who also had a perfect GPA in the fall, entered her final semester with a 3.768. Madeline Catalano (3.555), Madison Barber (3.425), McIlvain (3.417), Lee (3.180) and Cornelius (3.062) are also Honor Roll students.
