TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team continues CAA play by traveling to New Jersey for a Sunday afternoon showdown against Monmouth. The Tigers are coming off another 30+ point victory against William & Mary on Friday.
Chasing Milestones
A couple of Tigers are close to achieving some impressive career milestones.
Skye Williams is 31 points away from 500 career points at Towson.
Anissa Rivera is ten points away from totaling 1000 career points.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
Quinzia Fulmore has thrived stepping into the starting lineup this season. The sophomore forward from Greensboro, North Carolina is averaging 10.1 points per game to rank second on the team. Fulmore is second in the CAA in field goal percentage totaling 56.8% in 15 games. She pulls down 6.9 rebounds a game to rank 11th in the CAA and second on the team.
The Sky is the Limit
Skye Williams has started the season on fire. Williams is shooting 49.5% from the floor this season to rank eighth in the CAA in field goal percentage. Williams has totaled eight games where she has finished with 50% or better. The graduate student from Indianapolis, Indiana is averaging a career-best 8.8 pts per game and playing in a career-high 26.0 minutes per game.
Leading the Way
Redshirt junior guard
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas leads the Tigers in points (16.5), rebounds (7.0), assists (4.2), blocks (1.3), steals (2.5) and minutes (31.2) this season. She ranks fourth in the CAA in scoring, ninth in rebounds, second in assists, third in steals, fourth in free throw percentage (86.6%) and sixth in blocks. The guard from Camden, Delaware has scored double figures in every game this season.
Hitting the Road
The Tigers continue CAA play with four of their next five games on the road. Towson starts its journey in New Jersey against Monmouth, then travels to Delaware to face the Blue Hens. The Tigers return home to face Drexel, then visit Northeastern and wrap up their adventure with a visit to CAA newcomer Stony Brook.
Lockdown Defender
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas has been a hawk of the defensive side of the ball, leading the team in steals and steals per game. Kornegay-Lucas ranks 54th in the nation and ranks third in the CAA in steals with 37. The redshirt junior averages 2.47 steals per game to be 51st in the NCAA and third in the conference in steals per game.
New Faces
Towson added six newcomers this season for the 2022-23 season. Four players played college basketball last year, with two incoming freshmen.
Taiye Johnson transferred after three years at Radford, while
Alexia Nelson comes after two years at UMBC.
Alina Sendar comes in after one year at Georgia and
Patricia Anumgba comes from CCBC Essex.
India Johnston and
Gabby Scott made their collegiate debuts this season.
Preseason Honors
Anissa Rivera was picked to Preseason All-CAA First Team after being named All-CAA Preseason Honorable Mention last year. Rivera led the Tigers last season in rebounding, averaging 7.1 boards a game, including a season-best 14 against Frostburg State.
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was named to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team. Kornegay-Lucas was the 2021-22 CAA Sixth Player of the Year after averaging 8.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game off the bench. The Camden, Del. native led the Tigers in steals with 40 and finished second in assists with 71.
At the Helm
Coach
Laura Harper was announced as the Head Coach of Towson's women's basketball program in April. This is her first season in charge of the Tigers. Harper previously coached Coppin State for the last two years. She inherits a squad that went 24-8 and made a WNIT appearance last year.
SECU Fortress
The Tigers hold a 74-57 (.565) home record since SECU Arena was built, including a 32-18 (.640) record against non-conference opponents. Towson holds a 42-40 (.512) against CAA foes.
Preseason Poll
The CAA announced its annual Preseason Poll to start the season. The Tigers were picked to finish fifth but received two first-place votes, the second most of any CAA team. Drexel was picked to finish first, receiving 10 votes.
Tigers In the Postseason
Towson has reached the postseason three times in the past 15 years. The team made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2019. They also advanced to the WBI in 2010. Towson earned their second trip to the Postseason WNIT after a 24-8 season last year.
Scouting Monmouth
The Hawks have accumulated an 8-8 overall record with a 3-2 CAA record. Monmouth leads the CAA in blocks per game with four and makes the most three-pointers per game, making 7.63 a game. Monmouth is led by Bri Tinsley, who leads the team in points (13.3), assists (4.1) and steals (1.0), while Belle Kranbuhl is tied atop the CAA in blocks averaging two per game. Monmouth started their season with a 39-78 loss to St. John's, but the Hawks bounced back with a 79-70 win over New Jersey City. The Hawks defeated Sacred Heart 77-62, then dropped a close game with Loyola (Md.) 59-61. Monmouth was victorious against Navy 76-56, but lost to Brown 69-70 on a last-second free throw. The Hawks picked up an overtime victory against NJIT 70-62, then defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 57-44. Monmouth closed out non-conference play with three consecutive losses, but started CAA play with a 54-49 win over Northeastern. The Hawks followed up with an 80-60 win over Delaware but fell 52-69 to N.C. A&T. The Hawks were victorious against Elon 64-56, but in their most recent game, Monmouth's comeback fell short against Stony Brook 59-69 on Friday.
Last Time Out
The Tigers went against William & Mary. The Tribe gained an early, but the Tigers chipped away and took the lead as the time expired in the first quarter as
Anissa Rivera hit a step-back jumper. The Tigers used that momentum to fuel a 24-point second quarter to have a commanding 36-21 lead. Towson continued to grow its lead outscoring the Tribe 20-12. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers were able to close out the game and pick up their second consecutive 30+ point victory.
